Thread: Hone ID?

I know, I know another hone ID thread, but since I have never owned or held a thuringian hone I am not sure if this is one. It was listed as a vintage thuringian and since it was only like $25 I thought I would take a chance since I have been wanting to try one. Dimension are about 6x2x5/8. The price and the dimensions are what really had me drawn to it since 6x2 are my preferred size since I like to hold my stones. So far from messing around with it it seems to have the same silky feel of my PHIG, but it cuts alot faster and gave a nice smooth edge. When I got it it was black and felt extremely smooth. Looked like it was glazed heavily, but there was about a 1/8 dip that had to be lapped out. Lapping it took maybe 2 min at the most to take it out. Still has a couple of small chips on the surface that could be lapped out, but doesnt seem to affect honing so they can stay for now till I start to not like the look of them. After lapping it looked greyish blue, but I think I am partially colorblind so you decide. It slurries pretty easy and the slurry looks like a grey or light grey. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated. The lighting it the pictures might be misleading cause the sides of the stone are still black or really dark grey.

The shape of a Thuringian is usually more rectangular with right angles I think.

Hmm..idk. I think the Barbers Delight thuri is 6x2. Not real sure though. I can't really give you any guesses based on these pics though. Heck, if I'd have seen it, I'd have bought it too.

Yes, Barbers' Delight is 6x2" according to that old diagram with colours and sizes. This stone has rounded and a natural shaped corner whereas my Thuringians/Eschers have pretty sharp corners.

I do indeed think it is the german stuff.
I have a few of that stuff.
I perty sure the one i have that's 7by2b1 is that german stuff.
cause the blue color and a tiny peice of red label left.

I thought the Barbers Delight was a yellow green though? Also possible its a nice slate stone too. Dont underestimate them as finishers!

Looks more like a Llyn Melynllyn or Yellow lake stone to me. Is the slurry really white or turning more into purple?

The slurry is grey or light grey. The pictures are misleading. The sides of the stone are still a dark grey or black, but the stone looked to be heavily glazed before I lapped one side of it. Either way it seems to compare with my C12k/PHIG except it cut alot faster and smoother so it will work as a finisher for me. I was just curious if it was a thuringian cause I never used one yet. Well looks like I will have an excuse to get another stone. One that I know is a thuringian.

Well it is not proven not a thuringian yet - simply hard to say from the pictures. Main thing is that the stone works good for you. One day you might get a "proven thuringian" and you might be dissapointed of its performance because this stone you actualy have serves better for you!

Good chance it could be a thuringian, but like mentioned also a welsh slate (like Yellow Lake Oilstone) is possible. The feel of honing and hardness is different between the 2 though (I find the thuringians softer, with more velvety feel on slurry). You could have someone with experience test the hone for you to give you a better idea on the ID.
