Thread: should I Shapton?

I do about 80% of my bevel-setting on a regular old Norton 4000, my Norton 1000 is used only as punishment for really disobedient razors. In general, I don't mind the extra strokes, but I'm thinking maybe it's time for something a little quicker. I'm thinking of trying the Shapton 2000 Shapton Glass stone 2000 HR: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining. Looking for opinions, might this scratch my itch?

I am with you on using the 4K primarily...but rather than Shaptons, I was contemplating a Chosera.

I have heard great things about the Shapton...they are QUITE hard so they ought to result in a very crisp bevel set in the right hands

You should imo If it is anything like the 2k Shapton pro, than you would like it a lot. Leaves a very nice bevel, and works very fast too.

Thanks, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

For an edge you don't have to guess, go Shapton. Steady results every time. My line up is a 1000 king, 4000 shaptons, 8000 shapton, and then on to a coticle for softwning to a butter edge.. I have a 16000 shaptons, but dont use it..

I really dunno if a 2k GS is faster than the Norton 4k as I've never owned a Norton but my most used GS was the 500grit. GS's are not as aggressive a cutter as the Pros which also makes them a nicer polisher than the Pro IMHO. Horses for courses.

I've used all the stones mentioned. The Chosera is my go to bevel setter in most cases. It's the best. My primary stones for the rest are the Shapton GS series. I love them. I do have the 2k, which I use often in lieu of the Chosera. It depends on what I'm doing. On some blades, I use the Shapton 2k to set bevels. Works fine for me. No complaints.
