Default Info on this old Jnat?

I want to bring this to the NY/NJ meet up, and would love to be able to provide people with some info on this.

Do any of you more knowledgeable guys have any input on this old rock? Measures about 6 1/4 x 2 1/4

When honing a razor on it, it is slow to give up a selfslurry, but it does provide some. With no pressure, it is almost indistinguishable. With light pressure, it forms slowly.

Congratulations magpie nice stone. If the sides and bottom are sealed w/ black it might be Tsushima Sea stone, Approx 6K. Does it have an odor? Testing a razor on it will tell.

I have not yet shaved off the stone. Its the only Japanese stone I have, and I was not sure how to properly use it.

The sides were definitely sealed at one time, and there are still traces along the bottom of a fine paper that would have went around the bottom, possibly folding over the sides as well. The surface and slurry looks a lot like the stone in your photo. (my colors are not perfectly accurate)
When you say 6k, will this break down like other Jnats and be useful as a finisher? or do you mean its max potential would be akin to a 6k?
As for smell, I will have to take a sniff and let you know!

if there is traces of paper then it is almost certainly Aoto, the paper is used to reinforce the stone from slitting ,something very characteristic for Aoto. Tsushima also dose not have the grain the Aoto has.

I took a shave ready DD Special 1, and put it to the stone. It may simply be that I am not using it properly, but it certainly took the shine off the spine, and seemed to lessen the edge.

Would either of you gents be interested in trying out this stone? I would love to get a more experienced opinion on it.
Of course, I need to re-seal it before I do much else with it. Should I use a lacquer or a shellac? ( I know it was probably sealed with Japanese lacquer, but I dont think I can get any of that!)

Yes magpie the slurry will break down. Tshusima would be a mid-range stone. They exhibit a heavy silt smell (not unlike Newark more like Sao Paulo he,he). Aoto is lower in grit range. Not an edge I would care to shave test.

If you have access to a Norton 4/8 to test against, a loupe will show if it improves or degrades the edge. This would be a good experiment for your upcoming event. I would be happy to check it out if you wish to send PM we could discuss arrangements..
