Thanked: 1936Was the color the same dry, then change when adding water? I ask this because I have a un-named synthetic barber hone close to the same coloring, hard as nails, and works pretty well. I lapped and finished it to 1K on wet/dry sandpaper & it was worth it. Almost as good a touch-up stone as my 16K as far as speed and somewhere around the 10-12K range if you use lather.
After the testing, please give a "grit" range like: bevel setter, pre-polisher, polisher, finisherSoutheastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 116I haven't put it to it's paces yet but I did take a shave ready razor and did about 30 laps on this thing with just water, then stropped the blade. Passed the HHT no problem. I just had surgery on my nose so I won't be able to shave for a few days but will absolutely report back on the results.
I'd let you know if the smell was of a natural or not but I can't smell or taste anything right now....Last edited by brooksie967; 03-03-2013 at 11:51 PM. Reason: my grammar sucks

Thanked: 116Despite our initial examination and thought that it was a natural stone, I'm thinking that even with the lack of uniformity of colour that the stone is most likely man made. The consistency and composition of this stone does look more like a barber hone to me and feels very similar to my barber hones.

Thanked: 116Sorry for the delay in getting around to this. Shaved off of the barber hone this morning and wanted to share my experience.
I took a shave ready wade and butcher extra hollow ground razor that I had finished on my green thuringian. I did 10 laps or so with just water and 10 with lather (made from soap). I then did my usual stropping which is comprised of 50 laps on just leather.
The shave went well, definitely a capable hone that would be great for travel purposes. I'd put it around the 10k mark IMHO. I've shaved with many naniwa 12k edges from Ironsidegnr and felt that this razor wasn't as keep as that. It also wasn't as keen or smooth as when the razor was finished on thuringian.
All said and done, definitely a capable hone that would be easy to pack to maintain a razor while on vacation from your normal honing supplies but not something I would go to instead of the normal finishers of choice.
