Hey Brooksie,
Can't say for sure, but Union Cutlery was out of Olean, N.Y. (pronounced oh-lee-anne). I don't remember where I read it, or saw one, but they produced some hones in addition to some nice razors. I have one with a covered tang, "Our King", nice little razor.

Thanked: 116To be honest I probably won't use it! I really like my Jnat, my coticule and waiting on a Nakayama Maruichi that's Asagi/Kiita in the mail. The Amalgomite hone i've got is pretty minty so this one'll probably just get thrown in a drawer until I see someone wanting one in the 'buy/trade' section. The only reason I bought it was cause I saw the Am Hone Co Olean NY on the side and all I could think about was Frictionite!

Thanked: 116Found a review on it on "the other" shaving forum that reads this:
The hone is grey and glittery on the coarser side, and glossy black on the other. I'd estimate the coarse side something like 3-4K in waterstone grit terms. The black side is very smooth, maybe 6-8K, (just my subjective judgement based on the scratch pattern etc), but used with lather, and a light touch, I am getting a better edge off this than my 10K waterstone, which makes a more polished scratch pattern. The coarse side cuts fairly fast used dry, but taking out a nick on anything other than a really hollow blade may be a bit time consuming. For just maintaining blades though, it's great, and if I were to damage one, no doubt a rainy day could be passed sorting it out on this stone, with good results. You'd just have to use it dry, and a bit more pressure, maybe put the hone on a worksurface rather than having it on your hand.

Thanked: 480I had one of those, sold it a while back. Consensus was Exide hone. It was a nice barbers hone. A bit small for my tastes, but perfect for the travel kit.

Thanked: 45Looks like it got a nice review. Because of the small size it might be worth keeping for travel use.

Thanked: 116I've got one other by the same company, a dual sided "amalgomite" hone, both seem pretty decent!

Thanked: 480The course side on the Amalgamitgigidy is a bit more coarse than the coarse side of the exide, But the fine side of the Amalagamaslama might be a teeny tiny bit finer than the exide. Time to play around with them both! have fun!
