Thanked: 0What stone to fill in my gap?
I own a bester 1200, and a king 4000. Right now I have a dovo that was sharpened by Lynn. I have a SRD strop and a leather paddle strop loaded with hand American 0.5 micron paste. I use the pasted strop maybe once a month for about 10 strokes per side to refresh the edge.
Would I eventually need a stone to touch up my edge?
if so what would be a good inexpensive stone?
Would one stone be good to bridge the gap from my 4k to my pasted strop?

I would recommend a Naniwa 3/8K or Norton 4/8K combination stone or Shapton GS 8K. Most feel that an 8K edge is just fine for shaving with. If you can't get a good shaving edge from an 8K, you need more practice.
I don't have any experience with a Bester stone and the King 1K I have I use for knives. My personal choice on synthetic stones is Chosera 1K followed by a Shapton GS progression. This is my personal preference after using the "big 3" (Naniwa, Norton, Shapton) synthetics, they all are good.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Thanked: 1263Here's a good place to start reading to see what you really only need to hone.http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...on-2012-a.html.
If you're just looking for a stone to touch up the already shave ready razor you have, a lot of the crew around here use a stone such as the Naniwa 12k for refreshing edges.

Thanked: 443Yep, 8k, one that lots of folks here use and post about, so we can answer questions about using it. Nortons and Naniwas seem the most common.

Thanked: 177The 8k will give a very good edge and shave. I do use the 12k naniwa or 1 micron diamond film(14k equivalent) after for a smoother IMO shave.

Thanked: 0Instead of getting a 12k, could I just touch up edge with 8k, then use the 0.5 micron strop, followed by the leather strop?

If you already have the King 4k, a King 8k would be logical.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
