I have a terrible razor, unsuitable for shaving, that I keep around just for hone practice.

I can take a few swipes with it any time I want.

I'm still in the learning phase of honing so most of my blades could probably use a little extra. LOL.

The last razor I honed had to go from a completely new edge... I honed it so much I had to murder the edge again because it got overhoned... then had to start all over again, but I'm not sure I enjoyed the experience.

Or spend 700 more dollars buy ya self a kilm that you can heat treat prices of steel with.
And enjoy hammering away at a piece of steel.
But serious should I get one some day cause I would love to take trash and make blades out
    of it.

Mephisto, either you take up honing & have tons of natural talent, or like the rest of us - you have to work at it. mjsorkin had a really handy thing going there. Everyone learning needs a few blades that have sound metal, but are ugly, unpopular, or for some reason unloved. These are the ones you hone repeatedly, test stones with, etc. If they get worn into chopsticks - who cares? In the mean time, you're muscles and senses are doing the work that develops feel and intuition for what to do when a blade acts a certain way. Keep going. I've referred to it as SAD (skills acquisition disorder). Rocks & blades come & go. Your skills can't be taken away, and any blade or stone you touch will perform better as a result.
