Fear and Loathing while Honing
Well, you might have heard of honing acquisition disorder. I think I suffer from another malady RHD (repetitive honing disorder). Sometimes I cannot stop honing. I want to stop but I feel compelled to hone even when the razor is in good shape. I have reset bevels that did not need to be reset just because. Less is more indeed but I think I should only be given a finishing hone for my sanity and the safety of my razors. Am I alone with RHD or are there others out there? I guess I am just crazy.

I was like that in the beginning when I was learning. Went through a ton of ebay/antique store specials. Did it until I got tendinitis in my forearm. Anyway ...... now I only hone when I feel like it. So there is light at the end of the tunnel, if you're like me, and it ain't the train comin'.

You are not crazy but have found a repetitive, physical exercise that you enjoy. We did other things when we were in our early teens. The drawback is your razors will suffer an early demise.
Another person once posted he hones his blades every month. He said this as if it were the highlight of the month.
You can try putting the stones in a safety deposit box and buy some extra strops for CrO and diamond spray for touchups.( Assuming you do not already own such)

I do enjoy it. It sort shuts off a certain part of my brain, well, it seems that way. I think too much and honing flips the switch.

I do the same thing for the purpose of learning how to hone. 'Hone at least one of my few razors a day and most of the times two or three when the family is away. I keep a meticulous journal for reference. I'll now shave test without stropping then strop and test again, then CrO3 or diamond then test and strop again then test, all just to feel the potential difference in the edges. Apparently you're not alone.

I too am guilty of frequent honing when the razor probably doesn't need it!! What can I say, I just enjoy using my hones! As much as I like straight shaving, I enjoy honing my razors just as much, so I definitely end up honing the razors more than they require....

In a similar state of mind. I'd like to hone all the time, but all my razors are in good shape. Buy more razors, sure, but I like being married.
The problem is I don't hone enough to stay good at it so there's a bit of a learning curve every time. Much harder to experiment efficiently as well since it's so long between needing a new edge. But enough of my first world problems...

Yes, as I recall Dr Spendur discussed that malady some time ago. Honitus Extendus. The poor soul keeps honing until his 8/8s wedge is reduced to a 2/8s razor. He just can't help himself.
