Thanks for clarifying, Glen! But returning to John's question, would the 12K fit in a Shapton progression?

Finally nailed the edge on the Dovo Best Stainless using 4K, 8K, 16K and a 3-2-2 on the 30K.
I don't "feel" the need for the pasted strop but I will give it a try when I get my balsa wood strop... worried about wrecking what took me hours to figure out... at least I know the way home now!

What I was getting at was which birnando pointed out, PHIG'S are a natural stone. All PHIG's tend to have different grit's(a different topic). I could have also stated any other high grit finisher. My point was they are different hones of different materials. My second point was I do notice a difference in grit and also a difference in how they feel. I also pointed out I don't always go "up the Ladder" in my hone stable but it depends on the razor and how it feels to me.

I can't for the life of me figure this out. Am I the only one here that feels a qualitative and quantitative difference in the edge's between my 12K naniwa and 16K shapton? Not only is the 12K naniwa a smoother feel the 16K shap to CrOx on balsa is a large leap on the razors I hone through that progression. Wish I had a micro scope to see the grain pattern scratch marks.
I feel like I have entered "bizzarro" world.Four years of honing knowledge turned upside down!

Thanked: 1936No, you aren't. The 16K to me and my face leaves a more crisp/sharp feeling edge to me with my honing style over the 12K's sharp but smooth feeling. The feel between the two is night and day when honing, the 16K feels literally much harder like an asagi where the 12K feels softer like thuringian/Escher. I don't use pastes, can't comment there. As far as which is "finer", doesn't really matter to me as I finish on a natural stone anyways. I do have a feeling the scratch patterns on the bevels would show more haze with the 16, more shiny with the 12. I'm sure someone with magnification and photo abilities will step in sometime or another...

No, you are not alone in this.
Like Glen pointed out, there are differences in all aspects between the two hones.
If I have added to the confusion, I am sorry.
My reply earlier in this thread was about adding a 12 in to a progression of Shaptons, including the 16K.
To me that feels unnescesarry.
That does not mean there are quite noticeable differences between the two hones in question.
To me, there definitely are, if we are to talk about the finer points.Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

got ya B. My Shap's start at 16K so I have no experience with the other lower grit one's. My point was for me IMHO there is a definite place for a 12K naniwa in my hone progression. Could I get by with out it? Maybe but after using it for years I like shooter appreciate the feel of an edge it gives to some of my razor stable. I'm not sure how many of mine I stop at 12K Naniwa but it is prob around 30 or so. I tend to stop there for my fatter older shef steel like a wosty or W&B wedge/near wedge.
