Thread: New Dovo not lasting through a shave...

Hi,

I have a new brand new full hollow Dovo Best Quality razor that I honed on my Shaptons that strops up great but doesn't make it through a shave - i.e. lots of pulling and outright not even shaving half way through.

I've been at this for several months and none of my other razors do this?

I've read that some steels can't take a 30K edge?

My hone progression is as follows: 1, 4, 8, 16, and 30K - all Shaptons lapped to perfection.

The razor cuts arm hair like it's not even there and passes the HHT very well after stropping but like I said won't make it through a shave?

Any insight would be appreciated...

If you think it might be the edge from the 30k, stop at the 16k and give it try.

There's honestly not much in it, except the edge from the 16 will not be as attenuated as that from the 30k. If it still doesn't hold up, start to suspect the metal, or something else...

I would suspect bevel is not set. There are other things but that's what I would check first.

Could be Bill, but he does say that none of his other razors do it and presumably he hones them too. Checking the bevel is set wouldn't hurt though.

I have honed a fair number of new Dovos over the years, and although I have seen poorly finished ones, warped ones, poorly ground ones, etc, I don't think I have seen one made of distinctly inferior metal. You never know, though...

Randy told me early on to stop using the 12k just because I had it, and first shave test after the 8k. If it shaved well at 8k move up the grit ladder to the subsequent finishers of choice. Not sure if that wouldn't be a good thing to try in this instance ? As Neil said, could be the metal itself.

The bevel is set - rehoned it twice already - just did a test shave off the 16K and it sucked - dulled out almost immediately.

I have about 15 razors that I hone myself including smiling blades etc - don't think it's the honing?

I'd set the bevel again, start from square one. Go to 8k and test. See where it was at ....... just what I would do. YMMV.

I would dull the edge on rim of a glass and reset the bevel. Strop and test shave after the 1k. If its set it will cut. If you lose the edge its not set. I had the same problem with a dovo best early on. For whatever reason it took a few attempts to set the bevel. FActory edge on mine was very bad short at the toe and warped.

I have a Dovo Best Quality for over a year, was honed once prior to delivery, and it still shaves beautifully. Have done nothing more with it other than stropping on the white pasted linen, then normal stropping.

Once, about six months ago, I gave it 10-15 laps on the CrOx and that's it??

Wonder what's up with yours? How long have you been honing? Did you receive it shave ready?

If you haven't already taken it to the hones again and it still has the failed edge on it, try the TNT and see what that gives you. It's another diagnostic tool to help find the problem.
