    Default Getting Started

    Hello Everyone!

I plan on watching the honing videos over the weekend, but I will ask this question anyway....

What honing equipment do I need to get started?

    Mike

    Loaded question.
    Are you doing restores/eBay specials?
Are you just maintaining an edge.

Here is a great read to help narrow down many of the questions you will have to start.
    Give it a look over.

I would recommend Naniwa or Norton to start
(mid grits to finisher as the king and a few others can be considered for bevel setter see here http://straightrazorpalace.com/hones...l-setting.html)
These I recommend for the consistency and help available.
    Just my two cents though.
    It is just Whisker Whacking
    Relax and Enjoy!

Only thing to add is a good lapping plate. The DMT D8C or the atoma are the most common and will make life much easier.

Is a lapping plate different from a honing stone, such as the Nortan?

With a lapping stone, a Naniwa 12k and a Straight Razor Designs modular strop with diamond paste, you could keep a honed razor fresh for years, maybe your whole life. Good luck.

A lapping stone is very low grit and used to keep honing stones clean and flat.

    Wayne hit on it,
it is a plate to maintain your stone. Quite a few will use a flat surface around 400 grit wet dry sandpaper.
This can be adequate if you are not doing a lot of honing.
The DMT8C can be picked up for under $50 shipped and is a worthwhile investment.
    It is just Whisker Whacking
    Relax and Enjoy!
