    Default Most tape successfully used?

So, I am re-doing a Pride cutlery straight that my wife got me for my birthday. The geometry however is quite a bit off, and the first time I honed it, produced a massive bevel.

Question is: how many layers of tape can/should I use? Put differently, how much is too much?

For me it feels a bit "Squishy" after three, I have used 5 with success but pretty much I start thinking Re-grind or new razor if the bevel isn't small enough at 3...

Glen, thanks for replying. I feel a little star struck

Do you have any advice for someone who doesn't have the tools to do a re-grind, for instance, is there anything else you could put on the spine of the razor? I thought about finding a piece of tubing, cutting open and sliding it on the hone with. Am I crazy?

No, you're not crazy. At least not for thinking of that...

I am pretty sure I saw Glen posting about just this kind of thing the other day. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

    EDIT: here you go

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

The tubing could work but then your going to have 2 bevels. And if it's too thick the second one may be too small.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Three is also the most I have used successfully and even that feels squishy. I have use a thin walled piece of clear plastic tubing, ¼ inch I think, slit down the middle and slipped over the spine like one of those plastic knife guides. It raised the spine about 1/16 th of an inch.

The razors spine was very worn, part of a package purchase and more of an experiment. It worked well producing an even, thin bevel.

I like the colored vinyl tapes better than 3M, it seems stiffer.

It shaved well which, put into question the whole spine height/blade width… myth.

May I request more information here?

Why must the bevel be small, apart from the added labor/time required to hone the larger area?

    Thanks.

How would using the tubing on a razor with a honed out spine to produce a thin bevel that shaved well "put into question the whole spine height/blade width… myth"? I would have thought that it would prove the myth or have I misunderstood?

Is it a large and uniform bevel on both sides?
What do you mean by geometry a bit off?
