New blades ,old blades , the principle is the same. Set the bevel refine the edge, strop & shave.
Don't know if this will help:

bobski, the thread is still open and usable. It was just moved by Oz to get some more/better coverage.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 62I am a HHT user. I have it calibrated to where I know pretty much what it is telling me except when I am using Superstones. I don't know why but I can't get e decent HHT reading off the SS's.

Thanked: 13245Agreed,, They are just different that way, I don't use an HHT often but I do have a very well calibrated one, and the Naniwa SS won't do it right until after I strop then Zing no issues...
I have always just attributed the whole thing to the polish they impart and moved on

Thanked: 104As a matter of fact, I believe the thumb pad test, when it 'feels' sharp is the best way to know when to move up a stone. The norton 8/4K is a perfect example, they only go on feel and manage to shave OK. I concede fully that pressure is my 1st error, and over doing it the next. I think I just like doing it, getting the best edge. I have another razor arriving next week, and I so want to get it right. Equally I care about the result. My latest ethos is, 'If it feels sharp with your thumb, strop it and shave with it.' If it is dull and feels ordinary, don't lose your temper with it, walk away, come back a day later. It's amazing what difference a day makes..
