My experience with new Dovos is that you can usually treat them as if you'd just set the bevel, and head onto your 4k or 5k and move on up. But it's not like it would hurt to take a few swipes on the 1k, make sure the bevel is indeed there, and then work on up.

I tried the easy way out (4000/8000 + CrOx) and was rewarded with something that looked good and popped a few arm hairs but not a hanging hair. Went back and started again with the slow King 1000 for a few minutes, set a good edge then did another 4k/8k sequence, back to a dozen passes on CrOx and 60 more on leather. I shaved one cheek smooth as glass, cleaned it, sanitized it, stropped it up and handed it over. Newguy did a very credible WTG/XTG on one cheek. Everybody is happy. Nice to get it right for someone else. Thanks, all, for your kind advice. It was great not to look like a moron in front of someone who just handed me his brand new first-ever straight razor.
Guess I am joining the "set a bevel first" association.Last edited by MisterMoo; 03-03-2014 at 01:18 AM.

When honing a razor that comes to me from anywhere else I start by setting the bevel period. The only blades I do not do this with are in my own personal rotation. Just my two cents but after trial and error this has eliminated many headaches.
It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!
