Default Dovo - New, Out the Box

A friend asked if I'd make his new garden-variety carbon steel Dovo shave-ready. New, out the box, it'll barely shave frozen peas off the kitchen counter. I haven't seen the edge under a magnifier yet.

Those with NIB Dovo experience - advice for a starting point? For sure, a plain strop is not enough,

There is nothing wrong with trying an 8k to start.

A progression from 4k up will definitely work.

Starting at 1k isn't excessive IMO.

I'd go ahead and set the bevel. It will take very little to accomplish it but that should be your starting point. Some factory sharpened Dovos shave just fine right out of the box but others don't have a crisp bevel. You might as well start out with a new bevel.

The last two "right out of the box" razors I bought may have fooled someone into thinking that they had a bevel. But looking at it under a microscope you could see that it was a mess. It looked like a mountain range, full if peaks and valleys. Did it pass the usual tests (thumb nail, cutting hair at skin level)? Yes. But it was still a mess and needed to be reset in order to correct all of that. Unless it was sold as "shave ready", I'd do as Utopian suggested and reset the bevel. If its passing any of those tests, it wont take much to do it. If the edge is not looking clean and straight, I don't move on. But you would need to evaluate it under magnification before you would know that.

new dovo need only passage on finishing/polishing stone like naniwa 8000 or coticule.(also stone 6000)
From 4k so and so...just few passages...

And some of them have no discernible bevel at all, so they need more than a polishing stone. If you have access to magnification you will get a better sense of where to start, but there is no harm in starting at 1k and guaranteeing a properly honed razor. It takes very little time to set the bevel on a Dovo.

I agree with starting from a new bevel and up - I have several late model Dovos and they all needed a full bevel set out of the box... which was not hard to accomplish.

I always put a new bevel on all new razors - it gives a consistent starting point IMHO

But you did say it passed the HPT (Hanging Pea Test),,,

Put a new bevel on a new razor for a beginner isn't easy. Probably beginner can put a no good bevel.
With passages on poilishing stone there isn't problem...also because the bevel setted by the factory are not bad( remember you that dovo sell their product as shave-ready...) Beside for a beginner isn't conveninet buy a set shaving stone.

Of course if you are capable to set a bevel, of course the right way it's use a 1k to sett bevel.
