Thread: Working With The Zulu Grey.

I have been finishing on a Zulu for a while and I'm really happy with it. I am coming from a 10K Naniwa and using plain water. Mine may be a little bit softer and faster than most others, based on the descriptions I'm hearing.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago will be test driving it this weekend, initially on my Witness 1000, recently honed up to shave ready on Naniwa SS 1k, 3k, 5k, 8k, 12k. Really pleased with this razor as it's the first one I've honed to somewhere near the equivalent edge on other razors honed by the professionals, so I'm getting there.
Quick question on the Zulu, one side is as smooth as glass, the other has a very, very slightly rougher feel which side do you use or can you use both sides for different purposes?

You use the smooth side. I would recommend you start with just water on the stone and about 50 strokes. Shave, give the razor another 20x. If the edge improves, go another 20 x and repeat until it doesn't improve the edge. This will give you an idea how fast or slow the stone is. This all of course is done on a truly shave ready edge. Enjoy the ride, should be a smooth one.

You can put the label on the rougher side. I put down one coat of varnish, let it dry, then another and let the label settle into it, let it dry, then put a couple more coats over the label.

Enjoy the stone! I go to mine after a Naniwa 12k and love the edges.

There's a rough side? how did I miss that...

The rough side is for taking barnacles off the bottom of a boat :<0) I actually thought about lapping mine. After about 10 seconds I came to my senses.

never noticed a rough side on my stone, I have noticed a slight difference in the cloudy like pattern on each side. Just the other day looking at the stone I noticed a line that seems to run perfectly horizontal like it was two stones glued together. So maybe a differences in the layer of rock?
But just to be clear there is no difference in the stone top/bottom? it's just what's been lapped and what hasn't? I assumed there wasn't a difference, I lapped it and started using it on both sides.
