When in doubt, tape!

Yes, tape the spine if you want to preserve the gold on the spine.

You may also want to ink the bevel to see if the razor was honed. It is common for a factory to hone a new embellished spine with the spine off the stone or the distributor may have taped and honed the razor prior to shipping to you.

Off spine honing will alter the angle somewhat but maybe not that much. Either way ink will tell you and also give you a bit of education of what is happening to the bevel on the hone.
