Default Revisor Gold - Needs refreshing. Do I tape the spine?

As the title states, I don't know if I should tape the spine. I had my Dovo honed for me as it was not shave ready. He used tape at that time. It's been said, once taped, always use tape when refreshing a razor.

However, my Revisor came to me "shave ready" from the factory. I don't know if tape was used to set the bevel or not so I don't know if I need to use tape when refreshing with a 12K.

    Any advise?

    Thanks,
    ~mc

I'm sure that some real honing experts will be along shortly, but just my 2 ¢ .. I can't see a modern factory taking the extra step (an unnecessary one to some) to tape before honing it. Not sure how precise the factory hone is anyway.

I tend to agree with your thought process. This explains why my Dovo is still good to go but the newer Revisor already seems a bit tired!

I'll let this Thread stew a bit and see what others might add.

    Thx.

As they come from the factory most straights are not fully shave ready, shave able maybe but not 100% there. What edge is put on there is not done with the spine taped IIRC. Honing your Revisor with tape on the spine should do it no harm for the touch ups and even later when you create a new bevel, reset.

My planned of having my first razor professionally honed to give me a good basis from which to compare other razors down the road paid off. Yes, the Revisor was indeed shave-able but as I compare it to the first (as well as the other two I've honed since), I was able to tell the difference after a few weeks.

I'll tape the spine and refresh. We'll see how long it lasts. If it doesn't, I'll reset.

    Thank you!

1 layer of tape should make very little difference. It's the multiple layers that address issue with the piece.

Sounds like a plan to me. My Revisor came the same way as yours and I touched it up with a Nani 12K and tape which improved it greatly. I eventually reset the bevel, again with a taped spine, and it is a hot damn shaver for sure now.

A lot can happen to any edge in a few weeks.

As far as I know, all Revisor razors have a bevel set on a rotating hone and then are honed by hand, no tape involved. And 'factory edge' in this case may be a slight misnomer here, Revisor being quite a small operation run by probably less than a handful of people. Highly skilled people though, to whom "professional honing" is part of the process.

Neither of my Revisors came shave ready. They both required a bevel reset to even out the edges. Not a big deal as far as I'm concerned but a potential problem for others. The good news is that they take great edges give wonderful shaves once they get the proper attention. And yes, I used a layer of tape on both.

Agreed - my Revisor 8/8 was actually honed by Gssixgun (Glen), and he put a very sweet edge on it. He did note though, that it was a tad challenging to hone, so sending it out to a pro-honer for it's first edge would probably be a good idea.

They're superb blades, probably the best IMO of the "new" production blades.
