I too noticed an absence of traditional testing methods while honing and stropping.

And I noticed that you anchor your strop with a length of cord. This allowed your strop to bounce quite a bit. Although it seems to work for you, it could be problematic for a beginer should one copy that setup.

Also it appears, as far as video sequence goes, that you go directly from hone to linen then leather.

I've done it that way ever since I was a beginner.

And since I don't have a paddle strop There's really no other choice for me but to go from the stone to the strop.

I understand. The usual recommendation taught in standard barber texts, is to go from the hone directly to the leather strop. I'm not exactly sure why that has been the rule, but that is what I have always read.

So I was suprised that you went to the linen first after honing.

To me that feels like a natural progression. Linnen is rougher to the touch and I simply progress in smoothness that way.

I also go from coticule to linen to leather. The wet stone makes me want to ensure the blade is as dry as possible before hitting the leather.

LX just watched your video ....
You've made me feel a lot more at ease with my own honing .. I don't count how many passes I do with the X as each razor has it's own character . One of my coticules is a large ( approx 90mm ) polygon which I find is a really awkward shape so I seen to use my little 40x100mm ..

{thought "so many hones not enough razors " } LOL ..

I'm no surgeon either so I find my right fingers guiding the razor over .

Thanks again for sharing this , I really enjoyed watching

Yoo-hoo! At last I found the time to watch this video. It's great - long overdue - but worth the wait. Yes, I quite agree, there's something not quite right with the quality - it certainly doesn't seem right for a brand new, modern camera. So maybe Google Video did compress it a little too much.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Alex. I'll be saving the link!

    Smile Finally got to it!

I finally got around to watching this, I wish I had gotten to it sooner. I have to say Alex, great job on putting this together. I have been considering getting a Yellow Coticule Bout from Howard at The Perfect Edge, but I was a little apprehensive about a stone with anything but a rectangular shape. This video really answered a lot of question in my mind, and I will be ordering a bout as soon as I can scrounge up the extra cash. Now I actually look forward to having a stone with an odd shape to it. Unique to me I figure.

Best part of the whole video: "As you can see, I'm a lefty. If you're not a lefty, do it with your other hand." I am not a lefty, now I know what I have been doing wrong with my stropping. My other hand! Why hadn't I thought of this sooner?

But seriously, great video and thanks again for answering many of my concerns with your great video. I loved every second of it. I laughed, I cried, I was moved

It is how google compresses the video. I once use my Canon GL2 to make a video with some friends. This is the second best DV camera Canon makes. I was a wedding videographer for about year. After posting it on google, I have to say the quality wasn't much better then this. It was still pixelated and choppy. Don't worry, it is google, not your camera.
