Thanked: 46Honing 440 stainless
We'll all its been a long time since I have messed with a razor, but I had a kid today ask me about a razor that he got and why it wouldn't shave well. I told him most likely it was not honed right. We'll today he showed it to me and man was I right. It was machined beveled and it looked pretty bad. So I did a bit research and found that the blade was 440 ss. We'll having only honed Carbon steel I was wondering if there is anything different dealing with the ss or not. Thanks for any advice.

Thanked: 13245Brand ???
Most of the 440 SS out there are not really Straight Razors they are what we call RSO or Razor Shaped Objects..
Usually either the Temper or the Geometry keep them from shaving sometimes both

From what I looked at, unfortunately it looks like another RSO being sold off as a legitimate straight razor. Sheesh, must admit, it gets me PO'd that these are being sold as the real thing to guys who want to learn how to shave with a straight and are discouraged having purchased junk first thing....at least JB918 you made it here and found out that you won't really have much success with that razor, and that any frustration you have had, has been the result of being sold a false set of goods.
Don't be discouraged...we've all had hiccups along the way...I could tell you about the nice Dovo Best Quality straight razor I bathed in lemon juice, Brasso, and other various chemical compounds when I started out that took that nice mirror finish into an almost perfect, uniform black, complete with rust - in under two hours no-less!

Thanked: 3225You could always give it a hone and see what happens, you never know till you tried it.
