Rich offered me everything short of a million dollars for my Escher
I am afraid he really came down with hone acquisition disorder.
Unfortunately for him I have always wanted an Escher since Lynn told me it was his favourite finishing stone. I was just lucky but I did not buy it to make a profit. Next time a lay my hand on one I'll offer it to Rich 1st, that's a promise!

Thanked: 17I've got my 4X8 natural Belgian hone, I have nice blue-grey Eschers and now I want a large yellow-green Escher like Kees'. I think that the term fixation is over the top, I simply want whatever I want and am willing to pay for it. And I think that you know where you can put your lithography stone, comments like that have no place on this forum. There is no point to insulting members just because you don't share their passion for something. Ridicule is the weapon of very small minds!

Thanked: 17Kees, thank you very much for your kind words. I know that since I have a Dutchman working in my corner I am assured success! BTW, I've been in Holland many times and always enjoyed it. I have a number of Eshers that you can have your pick of, I just want that big Y/G E & Co. stone that you have, that's all. You have my standing offer, anything you want short of a million dollars!

Timeout.
Rich, I meant no offense or insult. Did you fail to notice the smileys and
Other people speak about brush acquisition disorder, razor acquisition disorder, or whatever. These things are in jest, and not to insult.
I just noticed that Kees thinks that you have severe hone acquisition disorder. Does this means that Kees is insulting you too?
No. Kees is making the same Joke that I made (without the smileys I might add) yet you completely fail to accuse him of insulting you. Why?
I did NOT insult you in any way
I did NOT ridicule you in any way.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 17OK, OK Bruno, I guess that the crack about buying your lithography stone for $500.00 just hit me wrong. I know Kees for some time, we have gone on and on over his yellow-green E & Co. stone so it's kind of a thing between us. Anyway, no offence taken and yes, I do have HAD as well as RAD and a bunch of other AD's!

Chill people chill. No-one is trying to insult anyone. Of anything that could be taken as an insult you should consider whether it's a joke first. A lot less toes get stepped on that way.

No harm no foul.
I guess you could put me down for CAD (Crud Acquisition Syndrome) combine with SD (Salvageing Disorder).
My finances are limited currently (What with the house renovation and wife and kids) but I like to take good but damaged / rusted / warped blades and restore them.
I once spent 19 hours honing on a difficult Joseph Rodgers. I am currently making scales for a busted wedge that will look really cool, once I manage to remove the oxidation, sand away the pitting, hone away the warp in the blade and somehow fill the pinhole that is much too wide for a 2 mm pin.
Then there is the rusted but otherwise in perfect condition J.Barber that should be close to 200 years old...
In any case, if I ever encounter an interesting hone during my hunt for rusty old razors, I'll drop you a PM so that you can check it out.
I hope you'll find your Escher.

Thanked: 108Good advice LX.
Also, anyone who's suffering from HAD ought to watch LX's video.
He's got a little coticule bout that he does virtually all his sharpening on. He does a masterful X on it, and fast, without once lifting the spine, for about ten minutes.
A reminder that it's not about which tools you own but which ones you've mastered. Made me want to sell all the hones I've been acquiring.
Reminded me why I got into this thing: simplicity & self-sufficiency. Bravo LX!

Thanked: 9Chris,
I see your point and more power to Alex for his skills, but the fact that various stones will have a different effect on the blade, resulting in different feel is still there. Honestly, after I have used Coticule and Escher (+ CrO2) - I am not satisfied with 8K. Sure - I can get a nice, even outstanding shave with 8K - but the others do feel smoother (generally - for most razors) - and once I get to a certain sharpness level, smoothness is what I desire most.
Cheers
Ivo
ps Having said this - is an Escher worth 360 for what it gets you - who knows? I do not have a Green / Yellow yet. I doubt it - but there is no way to know without trying. I am interested in trying for myself, then I'll make up my mind

Thanked: 108Ivo, I hope you find a Y/G and share the results with us. I think it's great that people like you are experimenting with everything and posting what you find. Randy does this. Joe Lerch used to also.
Sometimes early on in the learning curve (I'm only just past this point), it's tempting to think that there's a hone so fine and so rare out there that it will solve all your sharpness issues. Like thinking if you find a Stradivarius you'll be able to play beautiful music.
By the way, do you find much of a difference between the belgians and the regular blue/gray eschers?
