Depends how you look at it.
I look at it like this:

#1 it will last a few life times
#2 currently the yen is low and th eprice is actually very good
#3 Eschers go for more for less stone and are not even close to what this stone does
#4 Jnats are very expensive in general and you have to be very lucky to find a one that suits you but first you have to learn to use it correctly.

Take all that into account and the Suehiro becomes almost a no brainer.

My first strop cost $100 in 1983. With inflation the 20k is not a lot dearer today.

I'm only human. One of these days reading the threads about the suehiro will get the better of me. I've added to the cart countless number of times

Thanks chaps, I feel almost sorry for all those pasted strops and jnats gathering dust! I still like to use a pasted strop inbetween honing but am going to try exclusively with the gokumyo.

Pastes have done away with my need for overpriced expensive synthetic hones.

A well known honemeister here (or two) has stated that there isn't an edge that he has seen that couldn't be improved by a few passes on some pastes/sprays. I would have to agree

Sometimes I shave right off the hone/strop. Sometimes I go to pastes. Both have their place in my book.

i also have a suehiro and can praise its ease of use .. but lately to be honest the edge is a lil harsh for my taste.. I've grown to like the softer feeling edge of a coti.. imo if u get a good coti its a joy.. but by all means the 20k is a great stone.. even after a 20k i have found some strokes on water only on a good coti or jnat will tame that harsh feel for me .. but maybe im crazy

Is the Gokumyo 20K available without the base? And, do any U.S. based sellers carry them?
