Just came in the mail yesterday with a new 4oz peening hammer.... I've got a week left to classes and then I'm going for a big refresh on about 14 razors. Anyone have any advice? I now have 1k, 4k, 8k, 12k and chrom-ox. Using pyramid, would I use all the stones at once with a complex pyramid pattern, or is it better to use two stone at a time, and then swap out the low grit for the next higher grit?

I’m not Sure what you are asking, but it looks like a perfect progression. You do not need to use a pyramid every time with all your stones. It is a problem solving technique, when an edge will not come or stay together.

You would only use all the stones if you do a complete re-setting of a bevel. For example, from a chip removal where much of the bevel and all of the edge has been removed, or a vintage razor new to you and you just want to start over with a completely new bevel and edge.

For just a re-fresh without damage, no major chipping, ink the bevel and put it on the 12K with one layer of tape. A couple of laps will tell you how much of the bevel will need to be removed. When re-freshing, the bevel should already be flat and the edge meeting, but perhaps not completely or lightly chipping, all you need to do is bring the bevels together. You are refreshing, just the edge.

A 12k can completely re-set a bevel with about 40-100 laps. If after a couple of laps you see a lot of deep stria or the edge is not coming together, looking straight down on the edge, move down in grit to the 8K, continue moving down in grit, if needed to remove deep stria, then work back up, removing the previous stria.

The least amount of steel you can remove with high grit stones, the stronger the edge will be. Avoid using a lot of pressure, once the edge comes together, do 10 light laps to polish the bevels and edge, strop and shave.

so for a refresh I don't need to: pyramid between 4k & 8k, then pyramid between 8k & 12k ??? I can just do a few laps on the 12k and be done?

I just ordered a Naniwa Chosera 1k for bevel setting. I love Lynn's video on the Bevel Setting With the 1k Chosera. I also have his dvd & he has excellent honing techniques that work well, after all, he's a master honemeister. I have also watched videos on here done by Lynn & gssixgun & I love them. They know their stuff!
