Just pulled the trigger on a new Naniwa 12K
I've been getting very acceptable edges off a 4/8K Norton and more recently a Chrom-Ox Balsa board, but after much research and garnering of opinions, I ordered a 12K synthetic. I can't wait to try my noob pyramid skills on it. I also ordered a 4oz peening hammer.... It's going to be a sharp, and tight, christmas at my house

You will get a lot of mileage out of both those tools. The Nani12 is maybe the easiest hone out there to put a killer finish on an already good 8k edge-enjoy!

Glen, I see you like this. I ALWAYS listen to the more knowledgeable guys. Rules for a happy life:
1) ask people who know more than you
2) listen to what they say

Good choice. Be sure to not soak it and obtain a well-worn DMT 325 or a 600 to smooth it out under running water prior to use.
The little dots you see in the hone are the abrasive, the white is substrate. After a bit of use, the substrate wears away faster than the suspended abrasive. About 20 light strokes on the DMT makes all smooth again!
I really like mine!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

'not soak it' ok, that's good to know, I've been soaking my norton for 15-20 mins before use

Naniwas get a bit swollen and strange if soaked. I lap mine a bit under running water and let it sit with water on top for 5-10 minutes before using. I use only one side of mine, the side with the abrasive most evenly dispersed in the substrate. You will enjoy finishing with that!

I rest my case.
