    Default Help sorting out issues.

Guys, I have a razor that cuts hair with complete ease but it is a bit rough on the face. Should I just hit it on the 12k or go back to the 8k then the 12. It is the Bengall I posted in the shave of the day earlier today. Any help would be great.

What tests does it pass/fail? Did you hone it? With what? Up to what level? Pics of the edge under illumination? Obviously, minus the shave test. Unless it shaved better at some point, then that would be relevant as well.

I'm sure the cavalry will be here soon.

    Enjoy!

I use the thumb pad test and a shave test. I know everyone uses different tests but at the end of the day a shave test is all that matters to me. 1k, 5k, 8k to 12k 7 laps on crox then 40 prep and 80 on the leather. I only use magnification to make sure things are even and I have no chips. It shaves my face just fine but it was a bit irritated after the shave.

In that case, IMO, it's not going to hurt anything to drop down to the 12K for some weight of the blade passes, the CrOx then linen-n-leather.

A razor can be "sharp" along most of the edge but still have a lot of nicks that might make it uncomfortable.

Rather than us speculating here, you might as well work your way backwards. Hone it with the 12k and see if that improves it. If it does not, then drop down to the 8k and see if that improves it. Most likely it won't. If so, then drop down to whatever you have below 8k and at that point it probably will begin to improve.

You may ultimately work your way all the way back to a new bevel set, which you could jump to right off the bat if you don't feel like experimenting.

Update. So I got a couple razors that I have honed and a couple that Glen honed. After comparing and looking at it under the loupe, it looks like it has 2 different bevels. Thats the only real difference I can see from it and the other 30 razors I have.

I guess it is time to start over on it.

i had a wedge that i honed one time and was tossing are hair like a lawn mower on grass .. i shaved and was like "what the heck ? " looked under magnification and it had just a couple micro chips , honed em out and was good to go .. but your last post has me thinking cause the last razor i honed a couple chips out of i decided to add a second bevel .. first time i ever did this , looks good under magnification , was popping hairs but i really did not like the shave ! it was comfortable but way below what my current standards are and it had me thinking it had something to do with this new bevel i added ...i havnt gone back and went off the original bevel i set yet after repair but that is my goal here soon ... if you do go back please let us know what the results end up ..

Find out which bevel you're working on now. Mark the edge with a felt tip and check after a few roundtrips on the hone. If it is the one closest to the spine you got some work ahead of you. Has it been honed with tape on the spine previously?

Probably did not completely set the bevel.

This is a common result of a hair test, you can only test a small sampling of the edge.

Use magnification and visual test straight down on the edge, to make sure the bevels are meeting. Do not move up in grit, until you are absolutely, positively sure the bevel is set.

I think you are right Kees. I used tape. I used a sharpie and it was working the bevel farthest away from the spine on the 12k just fine . I am going to shave with it tomorrow and see if it is any better. Thank you for the help. I will let you guys know what I come up with.
