Congradulations Phrank, we have been waiting for you. When I first started honing it took me a long time as well. Glen videos and circles helped me. I use them from the start at 1K level it seems to help me with those uneven spots on old razors. Then you can focus on honing in the stubborn spots and then blend that area in with more circles, finish with x strokes at each grit level.
You know that machinist box that we have?
You may need one for your hones and gear if I know you
Welcome to honing you will be great at this, Even if you just refresh your current collection you don't need to send them out anymore. This is a cost saving skill set building endeavor.
Your only as good as your last hone job.

Still makes me chuckle, minimum for me as 85% of the honing was the bevel, when I finally got to the alleged finishing stones, it was a let down, it's basically all over once you make it good on the 8k...so did you get a shave fro the GD at 8k?
No, went right through to 12k and ceox. I have refreshed all of my razors, i just haven't really done a bevel set.
my experience pretty much mirrors yours. The razor seems to have a bit of a warp, i spent hours on the chosera 1k and about 45 mins or so on all the rest.
will be trying it in the morning, app 7-8 hrs away.

I won a razor for $10.00 the other day from a seller in Ontario, just figured it would be a junker for my next attempt at honing and making my hands ache from sanding. The pics were horrible but the description said there were "pistols" on the razor...hmmm?? So just opened the package up and it is a Jonathan Crookes and Son Hollow Ground Razor, and an added bonus was the actual coffin box!! So this should be fun, now to make sure I don't sand the damn etching off...thinking tape again!!!

Good for you Phrank. As others have said it is a special feeling to shave with a razor that you honed or saved from razor oblivion. I'm glad you are thinking about using tape from the get-go. I'm using tape on every razor that I hone now and I wish that I had from the beginning. It would have saved me some disappointments. Of course It won't affect the shave, but it will affect the appearance.
