hard seam?
Hey Tony,
What do you mean by " the hard seam "
and that stuff about two sided?
it is a one sided, single composition hone.
One side is a hone and the other is lucite.
A piece of clear plastic with a set of instructions glued to it and then a thin piece of hone on top of that.
See middle pic.

Thanked: 17GWH, I've seen these on eBay from time to time. It's a type of barber hone I believe. I don't think that it is a natural hone like an Escher or Belgian. My understanding is that those are to be used with water and not dry. Howard might shed some light as to if Belgian yellow stones were ever sold in this form.

That's interesting....
...I did a quick Ask.com search (Google didn't turn up jack) for 'victory hone' and got this link:
The World of Razor Sharpeners
and
Victory Hone
which, under 'TYPE', seems to indicate that it's a GLASS hone....i.e., the sharpening surface is the glass (lucite?) side, and the other is just a backing. As with anything on the interworldnetweb, the facts here should be double checked, but an interesting thought. I know that many companies produced glass DE razor blade sharpeners - any possibility this is one of those?

EDIT: I just re-read the instructions on the face of the hone, and they referred to a 'heel to point' honing motion, so it's definitely a straight razor hone - but could it still be a glass hone?
EDIT EDIT: Also note that while the stone in the collection says 'Fast Cutting' at the bottom, yours notes 'COLLEGE'Last edited by scarface; 04-15-2007 at 05:52 PM.

Well holy crap.
I hadn't even considered using the front but now that I look at it there is an X pattern on the clear side !!
So it IS a two sided hone??
That one at the link you posted sure looked like it had been used on the front.
Anyone else have thoughts on this???
Glass hone backed with coticule ?
Here I thought I was cool because I finally had a coticule and now I could hone with the big dogs.
I feel like I've found something that has been missing from me my whole life and I never even knew what it was.
I'm so happy....

not glass
Well, after further investigation(scraping it with a knife) it would appear that this is either the softest glass in recorded history or not glass at all.
I can gouge the "glass" with a butter knife and it doesn't sound like glass when struck with various objects.
It has that hollow "THUD" of plastic and not the sharp "TINK" of glass.
Could still call it glass, just like the linen part of the strop isn't usually linen.

Thanked: 346I've got a barber hone that looks like glass but is soft and easily scratched or shattered. Wierd hone, but it works well. Not the same brand as yours, but they could be related. Mine doesn't have the odd material glued to the back, but on yours it may have been glued on to keep it from being so slippery if your hands are damp (like I said it's easily shattered).
Edit: Mine is colored (not clear), but it looks like glass and feels like plastic, and can be scratched with a fingernail. Mine is also two-sided but it's the same material on both sides only different grits (accd to the instructions).Last edited by mparker762; 04-15-2007 at 09:07 PM.
