Actually, that is not the case. While you don't want to do edge repair work on a SuperStone (specialty) 12k, it really does not take that long just to set a bevel. I have never bothered fully doing it on a 12k but I have done aggressive honing on it just to see its rate of steel removal and the hone can be aggressive.

I have set bevels with a Swaty. When I did it years ago, I did not realize that I could use high pressure and it took several hours. More recently, I revisited bevel setting on Swatys but did use pressure. On some razors, dependin on the steel, it can be done in less than 10 minutes!

How is the naniwa specialty 1k in comparison to chosera or shapton glass 1k?

I have read in a few places that the shaptons are a lower grit in similar rated stones., though have personal experience.

At the 1k level I would think the difference in grit would be negligible.

The specialty (former superstone) is softer and loads up faster and so needs to be refreshed more often. While it works just fine, I would say it is the least aggressive of the three.

The Chosera, now pro, is harder than the speciality and it does not load up. For this reason it does not need to be refreshed in order to restore its cutting capacity. It releases a mud that seems to result in a continually functioning surface.

I have never done a back to back comparison between the shapton glassstone 1k and the Chosera 1k. The Shapton will feel like it cuts faster but I would guess that the Chosera actually would be slightly faster. The Shapton does load up and so occasionally does need to be refreshed.

    Thanks

I have a chosera 600 that rocks and a full set of Shapton's. I saw that the naniwa 1k ss was available in Sweden for a very low price, and the specialty 1k for $15 more that the SS.

So is the specialty worth $15 more that the SS, or is it just a label change so to speak?

Yes. The Amazon one is the SuperStone which is the older version of what is now called the Specialty.

Now buy the SRD version to avoid sending money to the evil corporate overlord.
