    Default Micro bevel ala Zowada...

My search engine skills just suck. I've searched and searched but can't find any discussions of using a micro bevel finish ala Tim Zowada.

Does anyone have links to such threads, or have an opinion on whether it is a useful technique?

My 2H2H had come with what is arguably THE BEST edge I've ever experienced.

    Thoughts?

Are you looking for information on "how to" "what is" or Tim's "micro bevel" ? Cause, I just put { Micro Bevel } in the search box and came up with tons of info on it. Let's just assume he does it like everybody else and then it is practice time on the hones for you :<0)

Here is one big thread that also links Tim's website info on double or micro bevel

Micro bevel is achieved by adding a layer of tape at the finishing stone stage. This technique has been around for a long time, and not only for razors.

Thanks gents... I should have been more detailed.

I know what it is. I know where to find Tim's instructions (not that instructions are really needed).

I am curious what the thoughts are from those who use it regularly or tried and decided against it.

As far as the search engine.. I tried 'Micro Bevel', 'Micro + Bevel', 'Micro+Bevel', 'Micro AND Bevel' and it got every bevel-set thread ever written but nothing discussing pros and cons of the Micro Bevel.. I svck at the internet. Am I supposed to use brackets if I want to find only results with BOTH words??

I use microbevels when there seems to be an issue with the steel at the finishing stage. Either bad geometry from honewear or a temper issue, will not allow for a good edge to form, in those cases micro-bevel usually it works. Most of the time micro-bevel is not needed.

I aways put tape when honing but for some of the razors - those that are with 1/4 holow or if im in hurry to try a new razor , i put 2 nd layer of tape ,and hone plain water only ,no presure .On coti and after thuri . I shave , and after , the next day , rehone from the midle grits to straighten the edge and remove secondary bevell . Also to see ,what to improove in the edge .
Somehow most of the blades get ready pretty fast , but it is so boring to know that there isnt need to be honed .

Unless Tim has recently changed his website. He details his honing method for sharpening new razors. One piece of tape on the spine until he reaches the final finishing stone. He adds two more pieces for a total of three on the final stone. He likes the results from this honing method.

So well put... Like you, I find a shallow feeling in my tummy when there is nothing to hone. I've given much thought to the double/micro bevel idea, discussed with a few folks more 'in the know' than me, and I've come to the conclusion you have. The double it an experimental bevel set in so much as if the razor responds well to honing with an 18 degree bevel instead of a 17 degree, there is no reason it has to be or should be a double bevel. Just reset the bevel with extra tape. I should also say there is no reason the bevel CAN'T be left as a double bevel, but for touch-ups and ease of future honing... just set the bevel at 18. I would love to find a 14mil tape so I can get to the same result without cutting a second piece of tape.
