"Great deal on T-I" razor touch-up
This is in regard to the Thiers-Issard razor which was recently posted in the "Auction Talk"
segment of this forum.
I purchased one, through the Lehman's website and, as everyone has noted, it is a beautiful
razor and the price was right. Furthermore, it came with an unusually good "factory edge."
However, after 3 shaves, with stropping only, I felt that it was in need of a touch-up.
I assumed that the bevel was set without taping the spine, but I elected to add one layer
of Scotch 700 tape and thereby create a micro-bevel on the factory edge. I gave it about
50 laps on a Zulu Gray stone...just enough to make the water "climb" up the edge on each
lap on the hone.
Then I stropped it on fabric and roo hide. The resulting shave was superb!
At some point, I will probably have to re-set the bevel with a taped spine, but until then
I am entirely satisfied with the shave that that edge produces.

I didn't try a shave with the factory edge. It looked...meh. So mine went to the stones before I used it. It was looking great when I was done. It's been shaving great since. I find new razors have a lot more to offer if you just get them honed right from the start. I've never had a factory edge show the true potential of a razor from the start.

I concur.
I tried shaving with the factory edge...without even stropping...as the "instruction sheet" suggested.
It was OK, but not great. That's why I decided to do it my way, and the result was a much
better shave. It has been over 12 hours now, since I shaved, and I can hardly feel any stubble
at all!
Fine razor! Fine stone!"If you come up to it, and you just can't do it, then that's jolly well where you are."

Thanked: 45I have shaved with the factory edge on two TI razors with success for a while.....but to everyone's point here...there is a lot of smoothness and comfort to be found with in most cases just a little work to take them to the next level! I love my TI razors and most days they are my daily drivers.

Yep, first shave of my TI from Lehmans w/o stropping, per the instructions in the box, was passable but not very smooth. Stripping on subsequent shaves improved the edge but it still left some to be desired.
The auto-correct on my tablet keeps changing the word stropping to stripping. If you see me use the later in a post it's auto-correct, not me.Last edited by Leatherstockiings; 04-25-2015 at 05:58 PM.

You'll be more impressed once the edge is up to snuff. After it's final polish on my 20k, the edge was pristine. Everyone has their favorite finishing stone. For me it's the 20k. If you haven't sent yours out yet for honing, do it soon. You'll be more in love with it when it returns.
