    Default Revisor stropping regimen

I took delivery of a Revisor 6/8 with a French head today. Sabine Kronenberg said they were manually honed and shave ready. Main question is, about how many shaves can I expect before first stropping? And how long before either a finishing hone or barber hone?

Got my first rough off the ebay through cleanup then honing to shave ready and a DFS. It was a Bengall just over 9/16 with a nice "Extra Hollow Ground" etched on the blade. After the first shave, it loosened up and I noticed it was missing a washer. Had to order more washers so got to the repein today. Will post to either show'n tell or restorations when I get the light box setup.

I went through the Hones forum and was interested in lengthy and numerous threads regarding Black Surgical Arkansas stones, so I decided to try some from 1K bevel set through Black Surgical and Transluscents. Stropped on CrOx on leather, linen then Latigo. The best I could manage was SAS. So will take the back to 8K, then 12K Naniwa.

For the revisor, I would strop before every shave, including the first if you are not brand new to stropping.

As far as honing, are you using a loupe or marker to ensure you honed the entire edge? Are you positive your bevel was set?

I'm not brand new to stropping. As far a setting the bevel, I use marker, loupe and then fingernail to check for wire edge.

Main point was to see if I could use the surgical or translucent as a finisher. I just got a 3" wide black, so will revisit on it.

Yes, maybe… if properly prepaired, (lapped and burnished). Naturals are Natural each is different and has its own potential and issues.

There is much written on Arks, as you have found and they have provided great edges for hundreds of years.

As Always YMMV. the edge on my new 8/8's Revisor could not be made shave ready by stropping. I had to reset the bevel. Now it's one of my best razor's for performing HHT Parlor Trick. It also provides with with a wonderful three pass shaving experience.

The black surgical was lapped, burnished, etc. The translucent was not. Recently lapped the translucent up to 2K but have not burnished yet. Will spend some time with the new black and try later on it.

I am not much for parlor tricks; the test is a shave. In my 55 years of shaving, I have never achieved a true BBS. The best is really DFS. Have used electric, cartridge, DE open and closed comb and several straights, the best from Whipped Dog and a SRD Dovo.

Hand/palm stropped the Revisor. It gave me a DFS. After finishing, shaved right side only with the Bengall I cleaned, honed and stropped. The shave didn't feel any closer and still doesn't; however, whiskers could be seen on the blade. Makes it seem like the Bengall is definitively Shave Ready. If I can get my Doctor, Pharmacist and Tricare on the same page, I will work on the ones that didn't come up to snuff.

I thought conventionally you should strop any razor once per shave, I am not sure why the Revisor should be any different.
I have read from most people with Revisor's that they are not shave ready from the factory. Though not having owned one I can't comment firsthand.
I also have to ask, what is SAS?

IIRC, SRD recommended shaving once with a shave ready razor, then stropping before each shave. SAS is a Socially Acceptable Shave. Comparing the shave from the Revisor was very close to the one I received from my SRD honed and stropped Dovo and the no-name I got from Larry at Whipped Dog.

I have two Revisors. Both great shavers upon delivery. I was able to polish them better but the edge delivered was very nice.
