Default All in on Naniwa Super Stones

I just ordered an almost complete set of NANIWA SUPER STONEs
They're coming from japan so I've got time to collect some more razors...lol

Taking my lead from the beginners post on honing:
    http://straightrazorpalace.com/begin...ay-2015-a.html
I ordered a 1k, found a great deal on a 3k, 5k and an 8k. Still looking for a 12k and a part time job to pay for them all.

I hope there isn't too much of a difference between Naniwa Super Stone 1k and the Naniwa Chosera 1k. The Super Stone 1k was $30 cheaper so I went that route. WHen purchasing from Japan you try to cut cost any way that you can

Thank you NFL for the 60 hour work weeks.

Looks like you've made a good start and some good choices. Welcome to the rabbit hole.

The difference is that the Chosera stones are made with a magnesia binder, are a bit faster, and are slightly thicker but there is not one thing wrong with choosing the ceramic Super Stones. Unless you do a lot of honing you will never notice the difference. I use a 1-5-10K Chosera progression for all full hone jobs but back when I had one, I would always go to a 12K SS finisher and still recommend them.

Oops, realized that the "back when I had one" remark might seem negative. It's merely that someone offered me about twice the replacement cost in trade for it and I jumped on the deal. As it happens I have quite a few other stones in that range that will serve the purpose and I just haven't bothered to replace it.

For me the Naniwa SS are easier to use that some of the other stones I've had. I've used the arks from soft to Black hard on knives but not razors. when I got in to straights I read and listened to the pros and decided on the naniwa SS. so far I get fairly good edges off of them. now i'm not in the category of the pros I watch on you tube but I can shave with my edges now without big old croc tears. you made a good choice.

The difference between the Super Stones and the Chosera is the binder and the amount of abrasives in them.
1k Super Stone will work just fine.

I've cut a lot of bevels on the SS 1k. The Cosera might be better but the SS will do the job just fine.

Love my superstones! I have not touched my Nortons once since I got them. I have used both the 1k Chosera and the 1k SS and I really think the SS falls short. It clogs quick and cuts slow. It will get the job done but needs to be lapped very often. I'm using Chosera 1k and SS 5,8,12k and I couldn't be happier. You'll want to get something to lap them with as well. I'd suggest a DMT 325 if you don't already have something.

Cheetah, start out practicing on razors you don't care about. If there is such a thing, otherwise, get some beaters in good condition. Make your mistakes on stuff you don't value highly.
BobH, bongo and eddy79 like this.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

We get it you have a nice collection, show off
Still it is a good idea to get something else to hone for practice /those wedges, I can guarantee you, are going to have issues (I can see one with a frown) and you will end up sending them out unless you know what you are doing which comes with some practice.

Very true. I should have something lying about.. If not i will purchase something fit for wrecking...lol.
I would never practice on those....Probably won't shave with them either...lol
The hones don't show up till June so I have some time to sort that practice razor out.

    Thanks for the advice
