I'm buying a new hone and found this one with 8000 grit on ebay for 46$ with shipping new. So, what is this for miracle, is it good or should i look away? Also there is Elsass ceramic for 36$. To ge on of them or stick to the original plan and buy c12k?

I don't have 1 but I am sure a read the MST are a modern version of a Escher or BBW but not as good a quality
Don't know of the Elsass
The C12 can be unpredictable
I know there are a few who have them and can comment with actual experience with them
Jmho
but save the extra coin and get a Naniwa SS 12k if you want to do your own touch ups, these are a great stone and there is an abundance of info videos and experienced people that can help you with itLast edited by Substance; 06-01-2015 at 07:10 PM.

Again don't rush save your coins a bit longer and get the Nani 12k it will be a lot better in the long run
It will last you years and is a lot easier and consistent to learn and use
An inferior hone will cause you frustration and the need to buy another later down the track costing you even more.
I really recommend holding off and getting the Nani 12k you will not regret itSaved,
to shave another day.

Not trying to be an a$$ but take the advice to save up , buying twice is still more that buying once the right way. Go with the proven Naniwa 12k one time you,ll be dollars ahead. Tc

Thanked: 127I had an MST Thuringian, not the light green quality from the Eschers but in my eyes at least on the niveau of most of the darker Eschers and Celebrated Water Razor Hones i had, enough for a smooth Thuringian Finish but not comparable to the 10k or 12k artifical hones.

Good Decision on the Naniwa 12k. It's a Real Workhorse! I've used one for quite awhile and it gives nice edges. The main advantage about using the Synthetics VS the Naturals is 'Consistency' I've only recently ventured into the world of natural hones and it does take time to learn them as No Two Are Alike. While I've not used it yet, one side of my Zulu Grey has an inclusion that's not on the side I've been using. I figure that if it's not broken, then don't fix it.
Things have changed since my great grandfather was shaving and all that was available were naturals. He didn't have access to even the shaving soaps that are so readily available now. Pasted strops were done with lampblack or ashes etc. The basics of this Age Old Art are still the same, the equipment is still 'basically' the same, but with so much more variety and options.
When you get that Naniwa 12K grid lap it with a pencil, get it lapped and enjoy it. Once you take the time to learn how to use it, it will become a Very Useful Tool.
Enjoy the ride! It's a long strange trip but well worth the journeyOur house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 3795Exactly.
It is not a terrible hone but it is held to the standard of Eschers and it fails in comparison. MY MST Muller hone does not produce as good of an edge on MY two Chinese hones. However, it can and does produce a perfectly good shave able edge.
They are rocks and they are going to vary. A synthetic is going to be more consistent from hone to hone in comparison to a group of similar natural hones.
