How do you like hand honing versus using the larger bench-sized Eschers, Phrank? I'm still on the fence since acquiring an SR Droescher "Barber's Gem" two months ago. Need some more maintenance hone time to evaluate hand-honing over bench here.

Actually, this one is about the same size as most Eschers....have two that are thinner and a bit longer, and another one that is pretty much the exact same size....I've held them in hand, or just laid them on my razor chest and honed while standing up...
Personally, I prefer putting them on a flat surface and paying attention to how the blade interacts with the stone and remove the movement of my hand and the distraction. I get consistent edges from laying it flat, only problem is with the naturals, is it's nice to almost get into a trance like state LOL, and you do some really fine tuning, great thing about them is very hard to "overhone" a razor.
Boker with silver inlay scales. I had to get narrow hones out for this one. Has a bit of a warp plus toe wear. Tried rolling x with no luck actually tried several things with no luck. But narrow stones honing in sections and finally blending got bevel set. Then on up to 12k.

I'm an-other Frank, just my 2cents worth but for me hand held honing past bevel set is what I've always preferred especially with smallish natural stones.
I have consistently had a challenge with too much pressure and holding the stones in my hand helps me with this. The only stones that I use on the bench are just too big to hold for very long.

Not a bad shave after the Washita Arkie Charnley progression. Gonna do laps till my arm falls off to see how far this C.F. will go..

This little Merx has been thru it all.
That looks like a pretty good sized Charnley, no? Wide and long, nice stone.
9.5 x 2 inches. I had a good shave off it but noticed tonight the edge was a little toothy. Gonna try finishing with it off a 12k edge instead of the hard arkie just to see..
These 3 today I have another 2 more Palmera razors coming in next week I seem to have a lot of Palmera Iberia and Filarmonica 14s lately, not that I'm complaining as they are my favourite razors to hone.:D
