The Chocera is hard but you gotta be pushing pretty hard or spending a heap of time on the King if it's dishing on one razor

Normally I would do heavy bevel work with DMT plates but this time I did it all with the king. It just makes a muddy mess.
I've been using the same King 1k for about 25 years and it does a great job setting bevels with no dishing, undercutting, or other issues. I start with a thin slurry if a lot of metal need to be removed, then clean up on pure water. If you're dishing the stone while setting one bevel, then you must be using too much pressure.

My King 1k does a great job, too, same as sqzbxr said with a thin slurry for removing a lot, clean up on water. The thing is a workhorse and has required very little maintenance. I like a clay-like feedback a lot.
It's not the 1 k. It's the brown 800/4000. It does a great job but it is very soft. Like i said, the slurry turns muddy. And after two or three rounds of light work it needs lapping. If I'm really grinding a blade that needs geometry corrections I need to lap every 10 minutes. That's why I picked up the DMT plates.
Yeah the Kings aren't really designed to do the heavy work that a DMT can do. If you want to begin the polish on a curved single bevel Jp kitchen knife then the King is pretty terrific.
I used to use an 800 & a 1200 & yeah, one nasty eBay wedge would require the the Kings to be lapped but horses for courses. I like the 320 grit Shapton Pro now for heavy lifting. Bevel setting is not such a drama if the geometry is already there.
"Bevel setting is not such a drama if the geometry is already there."
That needs to be underlined.
Honed up this W&B. Its an ugly little git but shaves like a dream :)
I had 3 sessions today , honing 5 blades. I am passionate about honing and hone most days.
This one was my last quick session . Just a chance to see how vintage Sheffield steel reacts to a Vintage Thuringian , using water only...
I have to wait a few days for facial hair growth but all the signs are good...

Here is a Piece Of Slate or POS for short. With water alone it does not cut.

It dulls the edge with a heavy slurry. It's no use to use oil because it does not cut. You are better off spending your time stropping on good leather.

This one I did first thing this morning watching the news
I REALLY like using bench strops with Kamisori :p
Nakayama with a Icantremember Kiita for slurry, after the Chosera 1-5-10 to correct the bevel

Tosuke touch up on Nakayama Kiita.

The blade looks kind of funky in the pic because it's still wet.
Yet another 14 on the hones today I don't know why but these 14s seem to be dropping through my door every week, I have honed many razors for the owner of this particular razor and I have to say he must have one of the best collections of Filarmonica Iberia and Palmera razors I've ever seen.

I soooo want a razor like that!! Waaay too expensive for my blood.
And you get them like they are a dime a dozen....
First post on this thread. First of all I would like to give a shout-out to Randy and Rod for taking time and instructing me. Thank you guys.
I got this Cape 650 off the internet. The blade has pitting and there was some rust on the bevel but only superficial. I used an Atoma 1200 to clean it and then on to Chosera 1K. Mid range work on Ohira suita until all scratches were gone. Following the instructions that Mainaman gave me I went on Koma then tomo on a Nakayama.
Sharp and smooth:)

First touch up on a new Orihi Kamisori on a lovely Nakayama Iromono.
It shaved nicely on the first shave, but felt the toe was a little less than the rest of the edge. So I made it all the same along the whole edge. First Kamisori too so I am going really easy and light while I figure it out. I did like 10:2 on the stone.

Another gorgeous stone.:)
Couldn't sleep so I honed up this CMon at 0300. Dilucot on what I believe to be an LPB followed by light slurry and then just water on what I believe to be a black Thuri. The shave was a splendid one.
Note: The stone is actually darker than it appears here. I adjusted the contrast just a little to accentuate the mottling that really pops out when the stone is wet which is hard to capture well with my camera phone.

From this mornings efforts..
This is the Merx & Co. razor that was off gassing. Blade was cleaned and i had an old set of scales that fit nicely.
Set the bevel on a #1 Washita (bottom).
Middle stone is a Dans Soft/Hard combo (soft side up).
I finished on my newly acquired Charnley Forest. Thanks Solitary Soldier!! Great stone.
I love the hazy bevel you get from the chert.. So different then the polished edge of a 12k.

Test shave is in the works..
Just had a session...
W&B frameback . Done on the Nakayama. Full progression with my new Mejiro and Koma . The Mejiro is super soft and the Koma cuts super fast..
The other two are a W&B and a Dovo SS frozen ice thingy? razor to be technical .
Did them both on the Chosera 1/5/10k then the Shapton 16k and finished on the blue green Escher ..
The Jnat W&B is the best shaver I've owned and is primed ..
The Esher finish W&B is for my next shave , part of my on going tests..
Unfortunately the Dovo SS was a fail , I will re visit it tomorrow . A case of needs more work ... I much prefer to work with one razor from start to finish alone :)

You guys must be sic of me by now ha:)
Just honed up my W&B 7/8ths & My Brothers Dovo SS..
Went up to 16k Shapton and then the Escher.
They pop hairs like a mad man but I have to wait until Tuesday to test them.. I will be shaving with 4 razors :(

My main shaver needed touch up. Got to try out new finishing stone I have shoubudani Mizu asagi.
Razor is a puma duck
Just refreshed two razors, shave test of the RigaRazor, For Barber's Use bit later this afternoon.
Light slurry with the Y/G side of the slurry stone until clear, then onto the Livi Loom strop...

Actually, this one is about the same size as most Eschers....have two that are thinner and a bit longer, and another one that is pretty much the exact same size....I've held them in hand, or just laid them on my razor chest and honed while standing up...
Personally, I prefer putting them on a flat surface and paying attention to how the blade interacts with the stone and remove the movement of my hand and the distraction. I get consistent edges from laying it flat, only problem is with the naturals, is it's nice to almost get into a trance like state LOL, and you do some really fine tuning, great thing about them is very hard to "overhone" a razor.
Boker with silver inlay scales. I had to get narrow hones out for this one. Has a bit of a warp plus toe wear. Tried rolling x with no luck actually tried several things with no luck. But narrow stones honing in sections and finally blending got bevel set. Then on up to 12k.
Norton's 1k,4k,8k then 12k naniwa sshttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...99a70f3c01.jpg
Speedster:
I'm an-other Frank, just my 2cents worth but for me hand held honing past bevel set is what I've always preferred especially with smallish natural stones.
I have consistently had a challenge with too much pressure and holding the stones in my hand helps me with this. The only stones that I use on the bench are just too big to hold for very long.
Frank
Not a bad shave after the Washita Arkie Charnley progression. Gonna do laps till my arm falls off to see how far this C.F. will go..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9573347ba2.jpg
This little Merx has been thru it all.
That looks like a pretty good sized Charnley, no? Wide and long, nice stone.
9.5 x 2 inches. I had a good shave off it but noticed tonight the edge was a little toothy. Gonna try finishing with it off a 12k edge instead of the hard arkie just to see..
These 3 today I have another 2 more Palmera razors coming in next week I seem to have a lot of Palmera Iberia and Filarmonica 14s lately, not that I'm complaining as they are my favourite razors to hone.:D
