No mystery here. You have simply used more pressure on earlier stones.
As you progress to polish, the shoulder of the bevel gets less cut.

Honed these today. The Imperial was having a chippy issue. Took it to the 4k to set bevel slowly. Very gentle and many laps and i finally got past the chips on the heal.
The T.T.C. Clean Shave had a chip at the toe. Prabably from closing as it wouldnt close centered. No big issue. Went to 1k thru 12k and all is good.
Will give a test shave tonight but i feel pretty good about them both.Attachment 264964
Thanks Roy. I also took the Boker I worked on and put it on the 12K for a dozen passes just to be sure I hadn't dinged the edge. It looked good but...
The report will be in the morning. Well, Middle of the night for most folks. :rofl2:
Maybe I should have used this instead... :gaah:
2 out of 3 aint bad.
The Boker just had a touch up and it was grand as it has been.
The Imperial was the winner of the group. Very crisp edge. Will be perfect after a couple shaves and a few hundred stokes on the strop.
The T.T.C. was a no go. It cut whiskers but not as smoothly as it should have. Will need to go back to the 4K and work on the bevel some more I think.
At least Im now getting to know the differences of the stages of sharpness of an edge. If that makes sence. Maybe next week i can get back to the stones. Or in a couple weeks.

Hone on Gents
Hey, I recognize 4 of those razors Glen! :w Thanks for your awesome work! :)
Solved the edge question. It must have been from hitting the USB microscope. Happened with another one so since then I try to only do loupe. To get the really good magnification on my USB scope I have to be almost touching the razor otherwise I cant get it to focus.
Took the Cape and worked on the bevel - 3,5K chosera followed by 8k junpaku. The toe was not hitting all the way and my rolling stroke is still in it's infancy so I did the synthetic progression using the edge of the stones. Followed by suita.
Finished on nakayama asagi with a pretty hard tomo I got from Keith-Gamma. It took forever to raise slurry but it was worth it. Pure silk. Kept working the slurry with occasionally hydrating it to maintain consistency.
Once that was done I started diluting. When I was down to very thin slurry things got a bit skippy/sticky. I read somewhere that you can use dish soap so I gave it a shot with a small drop and the skipping went away. Another 20 or so x-strokes then stropped. Shave was amazing, my best edge so far. I gauge the razors based on how they cut AGT on my neck, adams apple to chin, after I have shaved WTG. This one is sharp yet comfortable.
It was interesting to see how the razor was undercutting the slurry specially when it was a bit dryer.

Touching up a Wosty on a blue-green Thuringian hone. Yesterday evening I did the same with my Ralf Aust. Attachment 265310
Honed this one this eve. Did a touch of basic polishing and cleaning then went to the stones. 1K thru 12K. Will give it a shave tonight but the feel on the stones and the edge look good to me. But what do I know. LOL.

Nice lookin razor, Jerry.
Yep, EXTRA hollow, should sound like scraping burnt toast while your shaving. [emoji41]

Thanks Mike. It looks so much like a frame -back I wasn't sure. I know its not a frame-back but...
Well, I failed again. The shave was OK but not as smooth as it should have been. Guess I go back to the stones. Someday, it wont take me 3 tries to hone a razor right. I get there in the end but it takes so loooong.
I also have a fili that sounds like that. Its so cool. This one wasn't sounding like that. Maybe it was telling me it wasn't done.
Got it this time. This sucker should scare hairs in half! Its passing the AHT above the skin. Yes! About time.
BTW, Thanks for the PM Shaun. I believe it helped me.
Will start on another tomorrow!
I have a Carson Micromax which I've always battled to use and which has prevented me from re-setting bevels and doing a full progression. Last night I was looking online for USB microscopes and ordered one which has the following main specs which hopefully will now help my honing skills:
Image Sensor: 1MB Colour CMOS
Focus Range: 0 - 40mm
Magnification: 50 - 1000x

These are shots of my recent acquisition, an Ozuku Asagi, clearly the first picture is of the stone prior to lapping, showing the stamps. The second of course is post lapping, and the stone is wet showing the Asagi colour. I honed a Thiers Issard Spartacus 7/8 just now, and I took it to the Ozuku after the 8k synthetic level. I looked under magnification and saw that the synthetic striations were all but gone leaving the desired Kasumi finish. I used a fairly thin slurry made using a diamond plate, from the stone itself. I then diluted to water only, doing say, 10 minutes of x strokes. I'll have a shave with it in the morning. This stone is very hard, and an ideal finishing stone, it is full sized and double sided, weighing 1664 grams so it will last well.
Final finish on unknown French or German oil stone for a Pradat Thiers.

Rain on and off today and I needed a break from a presentation I am working on.
Dovo 6/8 that was previously finished on a Nakayama Asagi. I did water finish and wasn't that happy with the edge so I decided to try the new Ohzuku. Super hard stone, I was lapping it with an Atoma 400 and after close to 60 min over the last 2 days this is what i got. You can see the pencil grit at the ends but the middle is flat so thats what I used. Short x strokes.
Initially raised slurry with Atoma 1200 and shaved, not bad but could be better. Next I raised slurry with a hard Nakayama tomo. Honed until thin slurry and that's where it got interesting. The slurry became almost oily, like the water is not acting like water. That's what water only on my BG Escher does.
Hand stropped x5 and it gives silent HHT for whatever that's worth. Next step strop and shave.

Received what appears to be a NOS 8/8 Gens razor today. 30 laps on my trusty veinette coticule was all it needed, these beasts hone themselves.

Took out my Filly yesterday: shaved off 3 days' growth, one pass ATG.
Shave not noisier than average.
Learner, that 'burnt toast scraping' is pretty typical of a 'singing' razor. That 'singing' term is marketing at it's best... or worst depending on how you view accuracy lol.
Cheers, Steve
Kees and Steve56 for the past two days I've been shaving with my C mon Filly while I try to find enough time to hone the 8/8 sub cero. Kees was right that it isn't as sharp as it should be. The C mon is as sharp as it should be. I should be able to finish the 8/8" this evening and will shave with it tomorrow. I do expect some noise from it because of its' width and how thin the blade is because of the full hollow grind. I will call it "singing" too, as the marketing people did.
"Singing" razor absolutely, Thiers-Issard branded there C135 steel razors, "singing" blades...and all of my Fili's sound like a scraping burnt toast, great sound, I have some very finely ground W&B's, obviously reground in the streets at some point by a grinder, and one in particular that I've said could be the Fili 14's great, great Grandfather....stellar shave, and hisses like an angry cat as it takes off a beard.
Here's my best recorded example of a singing razor in action.
A NOS shumate's maiden shave after a weeks shave free vacation.

Was a few years ago now, and I can notice changes in my shave even from then. Very little face stretching for example, unlike now.
Taut is safe, and close..
Cheers.
Cool video, Mike-You really gave that Shumate a workout-definitely buttering some toast!
I'm about to try some Camellia Oil on the Charnley. I've been having great luck with this stone!!

Hone on sirs!
Thought I would share my natural stones I have been working with. Grey stone is a shoubudani mizu asagi for finishing and the other is a recently acquired vintage coticule. I am liking this coticule very much the edge is very nice. Seems like I don't need to do to much work when moving from this coti to the shoubu. Will have to do more testing ofc but happy to have a nice coti now. Good results so far. Also the coti is a natural combo, will test out going from Belgian blue to the yellow side later.

Last night got round to honing a Bengall I picked up recently. Virtually no hone wear and a good size at 13/16. Bevel set with Chosera 1k followed by 3, 5, 8 and 12 in Naniwa super stones. Finished with Narutaki Mizu Asagi with slurry then clear water.
Tonight just touch up to a Bengall cast steel and a Kropp. Both with the Narutaki again slurry then clear water. Have a few need touch ups and will keep using this hone as haven't used much and want to learn it better.

Cleaned up my grandfathers razor.
I went 1k paper to 3k paper. Sanded the scales and re pinned.
I also found a hairline fracture near the spine on one side which you can only really see with a torch shining their.
So maybe keep it away from hot water ?
Set the bevel on the 1k then it was Nakayama all the way. Finishing on my first ever Tomo . Its red, yay.
My last shave was awful , off 01 steel which I honed over a year ago. Next shave will be with the heirloom, cant wait. :)
Cheers guys
