I too like the Genco. I have three and they are all very good. I consider them some of the best buys in my collection.
A Bruno blade off the Norton India....:D

Nice!
Cheers, Steve
Honing last week sucked. I tried the Gok20k but was getting chippy edges even with jointing and going back to 8k. Next I tried the Ohzuku and the shave wasnt great. So when it all fails I go back to the green Nakayama, raised slurry with 1200 Atoma this time and worked all the way down to water.
This AM the shave was perfect with the 6/8 Dovo. Alum didn't sting a bit. I know that HHT is subjective but after stropping on the fire hose and then the Kanayama this razor is giving silent ones.

Just a thought. All the extra work after the 20k may have solved the problem rather than any one stone being the solution.
Slurry work on fast cutting Jnat finishers can often "heal" an edge especially after restorations where one can sometimes miss clearing up early stage bevel work.
Testing a members pretty pretty coticule.

Finished up some Japanese blades on some jnats.
A couple Saito creations, the SK3 and the Gloria, a Trade Mark, and a folding kami 'Hatori Deluxe' that seems to be made of very hard steel..
And also put my Riga to the Escher to clean up the edge a skosh.

Some very sharp edges, and a nice way to finish a long weekend.
Cheers men.

Two Harts just shy of 8/8" two layers of tape to give the edge strength
Shapton Pro 1k, 2k, 5k 8k and my unknown jnat
Jnat finish was dmt 1200 credit card slurry then tomo nagura slurry diluted to a few water only X strokes
Thanks
Wow i wish i found this thread soon. Looks like this is where the fun is.

Happy honing!

Wakasa bench size Japanese natural stone used to final polish this 7/8 Hart steel square point razor,
Attachment 270626
Finished using a slurry from an Atoma 1200, from thicker heavier slurry to light misty super light strokes for a couple of minutes. This Wakasa is a hard stone, but also has fine particles. Not of course a rapid cutter, but it has sufficient abrasives in it's surface to come up with a Kasumi style finish, certainly hazy and not at all reflective, so I'm happy to say that it did much more than burnish the razor. Using light strokes for a good 20 minutes, the slurry rode way up onto this half hollow blade.
Got these all finished. Ready for a test shave in the morning. If I can come up with enough whiskers.

Nothing to drool over. Im test a new hone that will eventually be for my tools. But i wanted to see if this could be an affordable option for people on a fixed budget or unsure if they even want to hone. Went from 1k shapton to the test hone bluesun 3k 8k then PHIG. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ec752a1303.jpg

I honed a Northfield that I just finished cleaning up a bit. It needed a new bevel and the whole works. I went with two layers of tape and used synthetics for part of the progression, then to a coticule. I used a King 1K, Shapton pro 2K, Norton 4K, and a King 6K. After that I went the rest of the way with this coticule. I found it a while back in a lot of dirty stones, it was almost entirely black with crud. When cleaning and lapping I found it had a stamp! But, in order to get it flat and usable the stamp was lost to lapping. Here I used slurry and slowly diluted to water. It gives a terrific finished edge.

How were the results from that 3/8k stone nick?
I shaved of the PHIG after the 3/8 and it was a very good comfortable shave. I only did one pass and there are only a couple areas that a 2nd pass would take care of. I have a thread in hones with what i did. I will try a couple other types of razors but this stone seems to be a good choice for someone on a budget.

NOS Henkotsu kami and the first real test of the new Karasu. I set the bevel on Botan on the Suita, then made sloppy mid-range progress on Suita's own slurry (this stone can actually finish quite nicely, which I did NOT want). I wanted to do my pre-polishing on Mejiro on the Karasu and finish on tomo, to get the feel for the power of this pretty stone. Very happy with the result so far, nice shave in 3 unnecessary passes (you all know the feeling, when you just can't stop scraping your face with that new razor).[emoji12]
That's a beautiful picture, sounds fascinating, wish I knew more about jnats.
Excellent photo btw
It seems like hone of the day today is the Naniwa 600. Blued this entire blade, it's beat up enough to be used as a test razor. It should be nice quality, once I get to clean steel....devil's spit is all over the bevel!

Seven in done and dusted back out Monday the one filly came with a nasty frown so that hit my DMT 320 grit for a breadknife, the Japanese Mistuon 3000 also had a very nasty chip mid blade which responded better than I first imagined all in all everything worked out quite well very pleased with the edges.

Thanks! There is definitely more than one way to hone on jnats. In this case, it is counterintuitive to think Botan should precede Suita, but that's the way they work. They overlap, since both break down, so when to stop on one and start on the other can be a fun exercise.
I snuck in a quickie touch up, shave in a few days most likely, that Henkotsu destroyed everything last night. Happy honing weekend Gents!

Bevel set on a restored Jos Rodgers wedge. Two layers of tape to start out on Chosera 600. Blade has been re-profiled. It may have originally started out as a much wider 7/8 or 8/8 blade indicated by the size of the tang/shank

Good beginning of edge, move to Chosera 1000 one layer of tape. Continued. Mike

I picked this Saito 135 Kikuboshi to learn the rolling x stroke. It was honed unevenly as you can see on the spine wear. There were some rust spots on the edge. Honed on chosera 1K, taped, with jointing x2. Bevel is clean and it cuts hair toe to heel:)
Lesson of the day, I need two hands to do a nice rolling x.
Attachment 271024
Attachment 271026
Yup...hanheld honing is the best way to go with rolling x strokes.
The stone hand can compensate for the lack of yoint range of motion of the razor hand...it does take lots of practice and ot one but two steady hands:)) but if you master it you'll never be affrayd to hine a smiling blade ever again.
Oh...and short tip...Always have a mat under your feet when handheld hining:)))
There's only one thing better than a NOS Coral...
Cheers, Steve
Thie is the razor i honed on the bluesun 3/8 k the PHIG. Today i ran it across this unknown hone 30 laps. I think it could be a thuri. I did 2 passes and there is nothing left. Fantastic.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...90d0653b3a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...bcc84d7419.jpg

Got a few stones in to test from a great guy and this was the second test, used the 8K to do a reset then went to the finisher, very fast stone.
Razor: Filarmonica Doble Temple
2-Stone Progression:
Shapton 8K Glass with light DN slurry
Finisher: Hantanaka Nakayama Kiita with tomo slurry
Strop: Westholm Italian HH

As my testing continues:
Razor: Filarmonica
2-Stone Progression:
Bevel Reset: Shapton 8K Glass with light DN slurry
Finisher: Unmarked JNAT with tomo slurry
Strop: Kanayama 30
Edge not as keen as coming off the Nakayama Kiita but should shave well I hope.
