Nice rock, Steve.
Sweet blades, too.
Yes mine is more of a burnished stone.
I have yet to go back and lap it since the first time, and don't slurry it anymore. I've honed my kitchen knives on it as well as multiple razors, and its still true, and flat.
I have thought of shaving off it, but I know I'm not going to enjoy it, like I do from a true finisher. Spoiled myself.[emoji56]
Thanks fellas.
A Washita is one I don't have but need to try. I was looking at one but I missed it.
The kiita is a good all around rock.
A Washita is a very different animal in its properties, composition, and abilities. I think there is more to these stones than we realize.
It is the only stone that I know of that can actually set a bevel and finish a razor. Not finish like a thuri, but it can finish an edge.
Very sensitive to:
* steel hardness
* surface preparation
* pressure from honing
They can be brash, or they can be mild on an edge, depending on what you do with them.
That's why it will always be a part of my rotation. Its so versatile in its abilities, and I love the feed back.
It tells me when a bevel is true, if there's a telltale skip during the pass, the bevel isn't joined completely. But a constant, velvety draw through the pass...game on.!! [emoji41]
I'm looking forward to spending more time with my Washitas. It's been hard to stray too far from my coticules as the edges have been so enjoyable, but Washitas and novaculites in general, offer so much to learn it seems a good direction for branching out. Lot's of fun to be had!
New stone to the collection, will definitely be getting a lot of action.
Was testing it a bit coming off 5k/8k and looking at scratch marks. Finished with 8k naniwa and then water only to under lightly running water, shave tomorrow. (Special #1 duck) Attachment 273029
I failed to mention what kind of razors I finished on my kiita. The top one is a King, New King & the bottom one is a Koken Army & Navy.
I was playing with the nakayama asagi, trying to finish on different slurries etc. These two razors were done on very light, watered down slurry. The black frontier razor took an exceptional edge. Very sharp and comfortable. BBS with no irritation. The friodur 72V on the other hand ended up being harsh so I tamed it on the BG Escher but the frontier was still better.

Got 5 done today. 2 finished on the Coti and 3 on the Naniwa 12K. Time for a test shave.Attachment 273212
The "Snap" failed the shave test so back to the Coti with it next week. BTW, the Coti is on loan from Outback. What a guy! Loaned me a few hones to play with so I can see what I like and what I don't want to buy. Owe you a few Beers Mike!
Hone of the day haven't put these two on the hones for a very long time, two favourites of mine my Iwasaki & HoshiTonbo.

Blew the dust off 2 of my 3 remaining hones. 10" Pike Washita in original box and a nice Norton 8" hard Arkansas.
Tried a gold dollar that needed a slight ding taken out. Need to grind the rust off my honing skills. It has been too long. Popping arm hairs above skin level. Proof is in the shave.
Update: while not as laser keen as I'm used to the edge wasn't uncomfortably pulling and left no irritation. Could use some more time on the hard ark and a very thorough stropping.

I have been using this Engels Argo to play around with some different and unusual techniques but didn't wind up with much success so....
I took it and went back to what I know...
Bevel on Norton Washita No.1
Flipped to "fine" side and then
Finished on my big ole chunk of black Arkansas
Stropped on the Washita 50 times
Linen & horse butt and.....

A 10 out of 10 shave
One multi directional pass with a little touch up for total BBS.
When I put the Aqua Velva Blue Ice on right after the menthol didn't even burn. Nothing, nope, not even a little burn.
A perfect shave quick and painless.
THAT gentlemen is the moment when you know you nailed it.
Thanks for looking.
I've been out of town all week and arrived home this afternoon and decided to hit the hones. It was a nice way to unwind after a long week. [emoji1]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b79c99b718.jpg
I've been learning a lot about novaculite honing over the past month or so and have had some successes and some setbacks - all part of the learning process. A fellow member here, Steel, has been a big help for me with excellent advice and knowledge. I made a huge step forward today as I was able to take a newly cleaned up flea market razor from bevel set to absolutely wonderful shaving on just two hones.
I use a vintage Washita and translucent Arkansas, the blade was a 6/8 Torrey. Stropped on linen then leather. The result was a spectacular edge that really opened my eyes to the potential of these stones. Very sharp yet extremely comfortable, quite a combination.
As I was shaving I realized that the Washita, the Ark, the Torrey, the strop (Rose's Barber Supply House), and the linen fire hose were all found here in NH at the same flea market over that last year or so.

Way to go Mrchick! I don't like to hone just one either. I like to hone a few at a time. That is a beautiful razor!
Vintage natural oil stones from Europe for razors.

Last night I was testing a hone that I was gifted by christian1. It's a Lynn ideal mounted to a piece of wood. It's approximately 6"X1". The razor is a craftsman 9207. I did a progression of 1000/4000/8000 norton and an approximately a 12000 c-nat then used the Lynn ideal hone with shave lather. I first started with water but it wasn't refining the edge any better than the c-nat. But with the lather it was slicker and was giving a lot better edge. The bevel is smaller in the middle on one side and larger on the other, due to a slight warp to the blade, but I didn't want to remove any more steel since it wasn't getting any better. But it still shaves very well. It gave a very close smith shave. I'm still learning honing but getting better every time.Attachment 273711
Thank you for looking.
I have been researching them. I have a nice Norton translucent...............
I've also got a black. I was hoping Longhaultanker would have had a chance to make it buy Dans but he couldn't do it.
You ever get bored ☺ wanted to see if edge is any different going 8K, 12K, JNAT versus my normal 8K, JNAT finish
Razor: Boker King Cutter
3-Stone Progression:
Bevel reset: Shapton 8K Glass with light DN slurry
Finisher: NN 12K with DN slurry then Nakayama Kiita with super light tomo slurry
Strop: Kanayama 70

The Snap failed last week so went back to the Coti for another go. Hoping this time I got it. Never did feel it sticking to the stone. :shrug: Looking for that buttery smooth feel.
Rodgers Best 1k thru 12K then spent some time on a Thuringian. Trying to figure these Natural stones out. Hoping for the best.
Blue Griffon 1K thru 12K. Found it to be a little fun and a bit difficult. Its got a nice even Smile. Meaning the roundness of the blade was constant. Found using the rocking motion worked well.
All 3 bevels are small but look good to me. Guess I'll find out tonight how I did.

Thanks for the offer Benson. Another member here sent me the Coti and Thuri that I'm using. I'll need to get those back to him soon. Now for the outcome of this honing I did today...
All 3 razors passed the shave test. :y (I also honed a ZY razor and it passed too but that one don't count. Its just something I had so thought I'd put it on the stone). The Coti finish did feel a little bit more comfortable but not much different that the 12K finish I normally do.
The Thuri finish felt as sharp as the 12K I normally do so I dont feel any difference in it yet.
Both blades done on the 12K turned out just fine. The Smile on the Griffon was complete from end to end. It turned out just like it should.
I like having a little bit bigger bevel as I can inspect it better but your right, the smaller bevels seem to shave well. I did the math and found that the Griffon needed two layers of tape to come out closer to the right angle and the other two I used one layer of tape. The ZY I used one layer of tape but that put it 20.5 degrees but I just feel I must use tape and this time.
So there you go. A fine honing day. Now if I can cut down on how long it takes me plus find the secrete with the Coti and Thuri...
Very nice!
Enjoy the day,
Benson
I haven't tried a lot of slates, but I've yet to get an edge I'm really happy with from the ones I've tried. Usable yes, but nothing really great.
Hey Victor: how are you doing? I have I have a purplish Welsh slate said to be 12,000 grit - I've never gotten a great edge from it.
as you said usable but not pleasant.
I have a purple slate too. It's ok but doesn't come close to being a finisher.
It's a mediocre middle of the road stone.
Pete <:-}
Mike, I've tried that a time or two & it made a difference. A little reverse psychology there..........
Kinda like Glen's 3-2-1 on a Shapton 30k
Its something a few of us have done on washita's, and I've tried it on a BBW with some success
