I've been learning a lot about novaculite honing over the past month or so and have had some successes and some setbacks - all part of the learning process. A fellow member here, Steel, has been a big help for me with excellent advice and knowledge. I made a huge step forward today as I was able to take a newly cleaned up flea market razor from bevel set to absolutely wonderful shaving on just two hones.

I use a vintage Washita and translucent Arkansas, the blade was a 6/8 Torrey. Stropped on linen then leather. The result was a spectacular edge that really opened my eyes to the potential of these stones. Very sharp yet extremely comfortable, quite a combination.

As I was shaving I realized that the Washita, the Ark, the Torrey, the strop (Rose's Barber Supply House), and the linen fire hose were all found here in NH at the same flea market over that last year or so.
