Basil I have the same experience. Some of the inox razors dont play well with my hard Jnats. I was honing a Dr. Balfanz and the edge wasn't coming out right, switched to a softer jnat and it worked. I am testing that one with an Escher right now and at least under the scope it looks good. Shave is pending so can't say if I solved the problem but I do know that if I shaved with the edge a hard jnat left on it the shave would have sucked.
Also make sure your ohzuku is absolutely dead flat and maybe try more slurry than less.

Is this the same razor you tried? Just dig it out of my closet. I had it sent to a few people but they all said they couldn’t get it to give a cumfy shave either. I haven’t tried t on my jnat yet actually but I’ll try. It seemed to get the best edge from a hard la vert coticule I had. But still not a great edge at all.

The one that gave me trouble was this one.

Different brand but blade looks very similar. I keep trying but can’t really seem to put an edge on it. Because of that I stayed away from all stainless steel razors. I didn’t want to end up with another dud.

Basil, a lot of people complain about that era of Henckels razors. I think the earlier ones using that logo are ok but the later production ones are as bad as Gold Dollars for reliability. The problem is it’s impossible to tell from that rendition of the logo what’s good or bad. I stick with the older logos when buying Henckels and have never hit one that has quality issues.
    YMMV

Totally agree with you. This razor was a gift when I first got into straight shaving so I don’t want to give it away. But like you said it doesn’t hone or shave very well, since then I’ve had better luck with my purchases.

Just shaved with it, Escher edge. Came out pretty good. Not Jnat good but pretty good.

Dr Balfanz is a Dovo product. A tribute to an author on German industrial history.
It is same as another Dovo model, the Bismark, only more plain.
I have one and find it to be a good blade. Seems made for the Japanese market?

Yes Tom, that was my understanding as well, made for the Japanese market.
So after the shave I tried to touch it up on a hard Jnat and again, it got chippy. Softer jnat fixed the issue. Will shave with it in few days and report back.
I think this will be a razor that prefers a softer stone and not the hard grey ones.
