When a razor isn't holding its edge, a more blunt angle can help to stabilize it. I suspect you will want to add at least two layer of tape. You don't need to grind away at a low grit at this point. I'd add two and see if you can bring out an edge at 8k.

Ok, I'll give this a try tonight and a shave in the AM. Thanks for the feedback everyone! Glad I found this board.

With lots of hone wear the edge will get too thin and will become fragile without taping. As soon as you get the edge it will basically fall apart. I would start with two layers and see how that goes and you might need three.

So did you make that spine wear so wide or did the two other "pro honers" do that?

For a fairly new razor, it should not have 20-40 years worth of hone wear on it.

Really - was that honed on Halloween by some macabre, slasher honemeister? That hone wear is brutal....

Well, excessive hone wear is typical when you get a blade that isn't holding an edge. The first reaction is to grind away trying to establish a bevel. It's not always easy to know what to do.

Unfortunately it happens out of frustration people tend to go bananas with high pressure circles and half stroke with the weight over the spine instead of using torque pressure forwards to get more metal off the edge. It is what it is try using 2 layers of tape and see if you can improve the edge. Try going slower and check what's happening to the edge more often. When new bevel is set change tape and run through your progressions changing tape every stone. Keep it light from mid range to finish and hope for the best.

Hey, one bit of advice we never offer new guys is that you're gonna make mistakes. So what? Maybe a razor gets a little bit trash d in the process. Yeah it sucks but you live to fight another day. Mistakes will be made. It's not the end of the world. If you're in it for the long haul you'll be grateful that the lesson was learned on a new production Dovo instead of something more precious. Mistakes are inevitable. what is important is to not make too much out of it and learn something for next time.

OK, so update for the thread.

I took the advice to re-hone with 2 strips of quality electrical tape and I did about 20 laps 8k, 20 laps 12k and it seemed to be pretty sharp. Popping hair on my arm easily. Under the loop it looked like like the original bevel was now divided into two with the new one looking pretty clean. I finished with about 10 laps on nylon and 10 on leather strop.

This morning's shave was exactly what i was hoping for and I was able to complete three passes with no tugging.

Thank you all for the feedback!

Question... Does anyone think I should reset the bevel to the new bevel now on the 4k, or should I leave it as is until I need to hone it again?
