Dead Hone
I posted this earlier, but since that post, my 5K Chosera has gone from crack like lines to actual cracks. This leaves a gap in my portfolio. Right now it looks like this: Chosera 1K, 3K, (lost 5K), SS 8K, SS 12K and my finisher. Is it advisable to jump from 3K to 8K? I just found out today that the 5K 'lines' had migrated to the top of the hone and could be felt with your fingernail.

Thanked: 25913-8k might be a bit much but if you spend more time on the 8k it should work.
I use a 5k Shapton Pro between my 3 and 8k and it works great.Stefan

Thanked: 3215You’ll be just fine, it’s the deep 1k stria that is an issue. Once you remove that with the 3k, the rest is just polishing, and the 8k is aggressive, more than most think.
Before synthetics, guys just used 2 stones, a low grit stone and a finisher, or just one stone to do it all.

I would be more worried about why it cracked.
Shapton's website warns about letting a wet stone dry quickly.
Don't know if the same applies to a Choseras. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

Thanked: 433I don't know if this would apply, but I have a Norton 4k/8k that came apart at the seam and also cracked the 4k side. I fixed it with marine epoxy and it's been going strong for three years

Thanked: 3795Personally, though I like to keep my grit jumps as small as possible, I think the 1,3,8 progression is much better than the 1, 5, 8 progression that many use. For that reason, if you had to trash one, then ya done good!

Shapton had a similar problem a few years back. Apparently, in very dry conditions like in the US southwest, say 15-20% humidity, the matrix would dry out faster on the surface than the interior and that stress led to cracking. They reformulated the matrix for the US market, and that's why gray market Shapton's are not covered by warranty in the US. The current instructions also say not to dry the hone with a fan, which would also dry the surface faster.
There have been other posts about Choseras cracking, but I do not know if Naniwa fixed anything, bad batch, etc.
How are you drying the hones just out of curiosity?
Cheers, Steve
