Question for Lynn or whoever knows
When Lynn hones the new razors that get sent out, is the spine taped or untaped during that process?

I believe they are taped unless you request otherwise...

He doesn't use tape on the razor he is honing in his circle method video, and he comments at one point in a video that he only tapes if the razor needs a lot of work. The blade he is working on is a restored razor, it might very well be different for the new razors he hones before selling

Heh. Sorry about that. It wouldn't get sharp very fast that way would it. :-)
The reason that I ask is because if I freshen the blade and I do it one way and he did it another, then the bevel may be altered just a tad. I don't know for sure if it would make much difference on say a 12000 stone, but I'm guessing it might make some difference. So if he used tape, I'd use tape, otherwise not. Also I edited the bevel error.Last edited by Uzi; 01-27-2016 at 08:23 PM.

Thanked: 1587As you say I am sure Lynn will be along to clarify, or perhaps just contact him through his honing business. But as a general thing in these unknown taping situations you cannot really go too wrong if you tape. Best case you are matching what the honer did, worst case you've gone a bit steeper but your freshening will work. Other way round (not taping when it has in fact been taped) leads to polishing the shoulder of the bevel I guess you could say, with no noticeable impact on the edge's sharpness.

Like Jimbo said taping will be ok, not no mention new guys are prone to eating metal so tape it and be sure. Tc

Why don't you send him a PM or call SRD directly? An easy way to tell is to use the sharpie test without tape on your finisher. If the marker is removed all the wayto the apex it was not taped. If part of the marker was removed but there is still ink at the apex repeat the test with one layer.

Thanked: 3795I guess I'm disagreeing with the consensus here but, from what I have seen, Lynn normally hones without tape unless the razor has a spine that requires it.
