Thread: Swatty clean up

Thanking you that worked like a champ. Car in Florida sun I figure a least 150F. So slowly heated hones in oven to about 150F and then let bake for 30 minutes. Came out perfectly clean.

Well,, test them out for the rest of us,,,let us know how they perform.

Never thought about heating them, great idea. BTW, I just use old rags / paper towels to wipe off the excess vaseline.

Will do but I'm still perfecting my stropping before I try to hone.

I am interested in this and think it sure makes them look pretty. It is 40'F out tonight and the house could use a little heat. I have a 2 blank sided no name hone and a little time before bed.

Ok so here it goes. Side 1 has no notch in the corner and side 2 does. Treated side 2 with petroleum jelly as I don't have any Vaseline.

My oven which I have to light with my Zippo is not marked as low as 150'F so I sort of guessed on that. I will turn it off before I go to bed and check it after work tomorrow.

After 15 minutes or so the petroleum jelly had soaked into the hone. After about 1/2 hour I smelled something coming out of the kitchen. Not bad but enough to wonder. Steam/vapor coming from the hone with a few bubbles on the top and i shut the oven off. My wife was already aware of my experiment but I told her that the oven was off for the night. [She is a wonderful partner!]

I may peek in a few minutes before I go to bed but will leave it until after work tomorrow.

I just looked and the front part of the hone was dry looking....

I took a paper towel to grab it and realized that the oil was on the back side and my oven rack is uneven, lower to the rear.

I turned it 180" and shut the door again.

When I checked the hone this morning there was only a slight difference from one side to another. Nothing you would see with my photographic ability. How much vaseline did you guys use?

Both mine were slathered up like yours. I let mine sit for cure first. Then I used the heat to get rid of the residue and clean up.
