Just so the curious out there understand the GMN-200 is not a magic bullet solution to an amazing edge. You have to do the grunt work and be able to get your blades ready to receive its glory. In other words if you cant get an edge to shave well without it you probably will be disappointed. But you will notice the improvement over the 10 or12k edge you may be used to.

I agree its cost is a little prohibitive but consider the price of Eschers, Coticules and JNats with a Nagura set and you will see its actually a good value.

If it stops you from doing any further stone collecting as it did with me, it's worth every cent.

When I e-mailed toolsfromjapan I was advised not to lap it with a DMT and to just use their little stone to clean. What have others here with it, lap or no.

Have not ordered yet but I will when funds are available.

They are harder than Chinese Trigonometry, you will never lap it flat with that touch up stone.

I lapped mine with a 140 diamond plate. One side was close, the other way off.

I then smoothed it with a 400 and 1k diamond plate. Typically I lap with the 400 and 1k and then with an old 8000 Norton to smooth the face. I also lap when I put the stone away, a quick lap when first used, and lap at the slightest swarf build up. If you say on it, it is just a quick lap, they are hard and you don’t remove much material.

I tried the 1 & 4k mini stone, but it is slow and sticks to the stone when removing swarf, a full size stone is easier, faster and I think you get a better surface, use a lot of water.

Yup I grid lapped it with a trend 300 / 1000 diamond plate came out fine. I tried the accessory stone and found it rather difficult to use.

Mine was not flat. It needed lapping. I lapped it like I would any other stone with a DMT. And it took forever. Once it was flat, I switched to a fine DMT (1200?). The stone destroyed the fine DMT. But it smoothed the surface before it died. Then I used the cleaning stone to give it its final prep. The stone that mine came with has two grits. There is a rough side and smooth side and it needed to be soaked. I love the cleaning stone. I used it frequently and it makes a huge difference each time I do.
