Spine is stright one side and a belly out on the problem side. I can't even get it to touch the edge using a rolling stroke. Looking at it again it's going to take a huge amount of grinding on the spine not sure what I should do. No need for a micrometer the swell is huge an easily seen by eye

Please clarify belly out. Your reference to a swell makes me not sure what you are telking about. Is the spine thickness greater or lesser in the problem area. If it is lesser, than as I said before a forward heel stroke should solve the problem.

So the spine thickness, if measured from one side to the other and on a 7/8 razor will be a little less than a quarter inch, is thicker in the middle than on either end? That means it is thinner at least at the toe.

You can fix it with a heel forward stroke combined with a rolling x. If you really want to correct it with tape, then put one or two layers of tape only on the low spot and then put another layer of tape over the entire length of the spine.

I can't even imagine this unless you mean that the honing is taking place on the back side of the bevel and that is what is keeping the edge off of the hone.

The bevel is very big on this razor and in one spot the new scratch marks only make it half way on the bevel çant get them to the edge. I but tape on (3 layers) and it made a lovely neat secondary bevel but still not to the edge in that spot. It's going in the draw for now until I have bit more experience honing. My other razors are easy to hone. I'm away from home for a few days so can't take a photo

Yes this is exactly what is happening and the bevel on this razor is huge more like a knife bevel
