    + 1 on a diamond plate to lap stones. It doesn't have to be a diamond plate. You could use sandpaper on a countertop, but the plate will cost less in the long run if you continue at this for years.

    Cost not considered ........ Chosera 1k, Norton 4/8, naniwa 12k. The plate could be the atoma, or the DMT D8C (less expensive) If you get the Norton single grit 4 & 8 there are advantages to that, though the cost is significantly more. They are 1" thick and will least as long as you do, or longer.

    Of course you'll need a strop.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    I started honing after about 6 months of shaving with a Naniwa 3k & 8k and the DMT D8c plate for lapping. Later I added a Naniwa 1k and also their 12k. I think that's all I'll ever need, except for good strops, of which I have a few.
