Thanked: 15Interesting
I have a Worsty that give wonderful close comfortable shaves. I honed it on film 30+ shaves ago. When the it gets a tad uncomfortable I give it a few laps on a pasted strop. I recently decided to get a few hones and a 60 to 120x microscope. I cracked this sucker out to have a look at my beloved Worsty.
Hmm, at 60 the edge looks nicely polished to the edge a touch of a bright reflection at the edge and a wee chip or two.
At 120... bloody thing looks like a steak knife. Eeegadds.
Sadly the scope won't take pics.
Micro chips? Are these the small marks at 60 or the serrated edge at 120?
Any guesses as to what the light is catching? Wire edge? I just shaved with it maybe that's what it normally looks like and needs a stroping.
Is there a pictoral of what these things look like somewhere?
Tanks gents

Thanked: 481My question is: How does it shave? It may be due for a teeny touch-up on a finishing stone if you use it as a daily shaver. I find that you have to be careful with CrOx - I dulled out my edge pretty quick and had to give it some licks with a barber hone to bring it back in line. Won't be re-trying that experiment any time soon lol.
Here's a thread with good reference pictures:

Thanked: 3228Give it a good stropping and then check the edge again. The more you magnify things the more minor blemishes look like huge issues and they may not be huge issues.

Thanked: 13249One of the best quotes ever posted on SRP
"I found out that the lower the magnification I used, the better my honing was"
Although that is a generalization, it also has some truth to it..
The biggest down side of using High Magnification when honing is taking the edge past the optimum level, because you are chasing the Stria rather then chasing the Shaving comfort
Anyway magnification has it's place in honing, just make sure your face is in first place

Thanked: 15Love the shave. Comfortable and close.
I use Dovo pastes for a touch up now and then.
I've heard it said that more than 60x is bad for newbies.
I was surprised by the chips though.
I think I'll go thorough my other and compare.

Thanked: 3215Which Dovo paste are you using?
Hard to say what you are seeing, if it shaves well, don’t sweat it.
It’s not the power, that is bad for a new honer, it’s not understanding what they are seeing, then doing more, trying to “fix” it.
Check out the thread mentioned by Marshal, there are several other post, by PCM with very good edge photos.

Thanked: 15Dovo red and black.
Mostly just wondering what's normal. I read the honing post. Doesn't show much about micro chips. Is a micro chip very noticeable at 60x?

Thanked: 3215This post, (Is This Microchipping?) Is probably more what you are looking for with photos by PCM of edge pics. He is using 200X I believe.
You can see Microchipping at 60 x, though it can be difficult depending on the lighting.
What you have to look for is the cause, some edges will shave just fine, some will leave your face raw.
The red, Iron Oxide is said to be 3-5 um, the black. Graphite, 1-3 um, and pure Chrome Oxide is .50 um.
I have had good results for years with SRD Chrome Oxide, as well as .50 CBN. But as I said, if the shave is working for you…
It is not just about micron size with paste, the substrate, amount of pressure and the steel and grind of the razor all affect the edge performance with paste.
A good test for Micro Chipping is to lightly drag a QTip along the edge, if it snags it is chipping.

Thanked: 15Thanks. That's a good tip. I guess experience and experimenting will show what these things look like. If someone has a fancy microscope that'll post pics, it might be nice to have a tutorial of what micro chips and incomplete bevel sets look like.
I think I'll lap my new hones and experiment.
Thanks gents!

I have a scope the does 60x-120x also. I like being able to see more with the 60x versus something lower powered. I never go to the higher magnification levels, it gets annoying to me keeping everything steady enough to view the edge and move the scope so you see all of the edge. Or I'm just lazy as I've purchased some cheap 20-30x loupes to see how I like them. At this point, it's all mainly ergonomics for me and having the easiest and most comfortable.
