Thanked: 2First honing on vintage razor
Hello everyone.
Today I hone my first vintage Solingen 5/8 razor, and test save with it.
It fills the same like my 9 months unhoned dovo. It needs more.
The one million question.
The bevel is set. Form witch stone should I start? And what I have to watch to not over honing?
thanks in advance.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but maybe your bevel is not set. It should shave if it s, what sones are you using? Tc

Thanked: 2Maybe I didn’t say it correct.
The sr shaves but when I tray atg it tags. That’s way I ask were to go back.
My stones are Norton 220-1k, 4-8k, naniwa 12k, 0.5 diamond spray.
And I have read all the hone procedure plus Mrs. Abrams videos.
Thanks

Thanked: 3226I'd go along with TC and check to see if your bevel is really set before I try anything else. You might find post #28 in this thread informative http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...ng-edge-3.html .

Thanked: 3215Yup, chances are… the bevel is not FULLY set.
It is a very common problem, and the answer to most honing issues.
More importantly what are you honing on, and what was the condition of the razor, before you honed it?
Are you using tape on the spine and does the razor have any wear on the spine? Make sure to use good magnification, at least 60X.
A photo of the razor, as close as you can get, showing the full spine and edge, will help, in trying to advise you.
Don’t worry about over-honing, it is usually not a problem, unless you have some very high grit, aggressive, 20K+ stones.

Thanked: 3215Ok, sorry, missed your 4th post.
Try inking the bevel and doing 20 laps on 12k with light pressure. Look at the edge and see if you are removing ink all the way to the edge. Colored ink is easier to see, black can look like a shadow.
If so strop on leather, no Diamond and shave. If you are finish honing on a Naniwa 12k, you do not need Diamond paste.

Thanked: 2Thank you all gentleman for the good advices.
The experience is always right.
Yes the bevel wasn’t 100% but I couldn’t see with the loop so I put it under microscope and half of it was disaster. I will try again tomorrow.
Ps. there are not rude advices. We learn until our last breath.
Thanks again.
