Thanked: 5First Hone Lesson
Well I just got back from @10Pups
Jerry was gracious enough to offer up a honing lesson. I had a fantastic day. Watching videos are nice to learn the basics. They however do not answer questions, or show you what you may be incorrectly.
I brought a couple of my razors. We picked my A J Jordan to work on. I had honed it. Upon inspecting it Jerry pointed out that it needed toe and heal work.
I used his Norton 4/8k just to bring these two areas in. Jerry showed me 2 very easy stoke modifications to my stroke.
I was able to to get these two areas dialed in. After finishing on the 8k. We moved on to a Naniwa 12k. At this point I had a very nice edge, the entire length.
Jerry then broke out his Zulu stone. He had me make a slight slurry. Then went on to finish up the blade. This is by far the best looking edge I have to date. When I got home, i gave it 100 laps on my strop. I am now ready to give it a go tonight.
Jerry was also very gracious enough to give me a soap sample. I think he said the product name is Arko. He guarantees me this soap is the Bomb. So needless to say that will be my soap of the evening.

Thanked: 4827I think meeting with one or more members is a lot of fun and great learning and something that is under utilized. I think you two are a good example of how to learn the easy way and how to give back. Thanks for the post. I hope many more follow this example.

Thanked: 5So true.
I found meeting up was of great help. I would say that this helped me save months of trying to figure out how to properly address toe and heal work.
There is nothing like having a mentor helping hands on. I for one am very happy to have found somebody willing to share their knowledge. One day I hope to be to the point I can return the favor to somebody else.

Thanked: 433There is nothing like one on one in person help! Now when you go back and watch the videos and they will make so much more sense and you'll understand the concepts way better, I know it did for me.
Arko is great soap!

Thanked: 5I took what I learned from 10Pups yesterday and proceeded to give my Russian blade a stellar edge. It is the smoothest shave to date. Mind you I am only 2 months into straights. I can't thank you enough 10Pups.
